These two parts of America had very little in common and it was only the question of time when the war will break out. In economic terms, the North and the South developed differently due to many factors, including geographical ones. As I already mentioned northern population was more urban living in the building near factories, they had plenty of labour force from the Eastern Europe for low pay meaning that they did not need slaves. Industrialization that started in Britain brought to big changes in factory work in America making factories les dependable on labour and more on machines. Transportation system was developing fast; railroads were built every day but mostly in the north. Schools and other educational facilities were also built mainly in the north allowing people opportunity to educate them self and get higher paid jobs. South had large plantations thanks to good soil and good climate, they were producing primarily cotton with the help of slave work. South did not like this and they felt like they had lost control of the federal government. First state that have left the Union was South Carolina followed by the rest of Deep South, the Civil War had begun. It was one of the most brutal wars in the American History with more than 600 000 causalities. No one expected to last that long, they all hoped for short war and solving problem fast but they were wrong. North wanted to hold the Union together at any price and South was fighting for their way of life. In 1862 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation Act hopping that it will push South back into the Union. This decision made slavery the biggest issue of the war but South was determined to preserve slavery. Because the North’s larger population General Grant and Sherman decided to use a strategy of “total war” that was destroying everything on its path. After Richmond fell to Union forces in 1865, Confederates began retreating and General Lee had to surrender. On May 10th 1865 the war was finally over and result of it was abolishment of slavery in the north and assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
