Was The Civil War Inevitable Or Avoidable?

There are many ways that the Civil War can be debated. It can be debated from causes, to outcomes, to victories, to even defeats. These are just some of the many issues that people can have different opinions on. One of the major issues or debates that people have about the Civil War is whether it was inevitable or whether it was avoidable. What started everything was when South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union. On December 20th, 1860 this was made a reality with South Carolina seceding. After this even it cause 6 more states to secede from the Union. In February 18611 the seven seceded states created a constitution and they became known as the “Confederate States of America”. This is where the inevitability of the Civil War starts. The North and the South had way too many differences to be able to get along with one another. The North was more industrialized during this time and the South was based more around agriculture and farming. One major crop that was being grown at this time was cotton. Cotton production and harvesting was on a downfall because of the cost involved with it. Since that was one of the main crops in the South and it was on the decrease, so was the number of slaves being imported. In 1793 this all changed because of the invention of the Cotton Gin by Eli Whitney2. This invention changed everything because it made producing and harvesting cotton profitable again. Another issue economically between the North and the South was tariffs. The South was very anti-tariff and the North was in favor of the tariffs because they needed them in order to protect their industries.
