How did the civil war come to be? We can go back to as far as 1492. There were many seemingly unconnected events that led to the start of the civil war. Including the introduction africans to america, their introduction to slavery, and the moral conflict surrounding the issue. In 1492 Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. When the news was brought back people began their journey to the new found Americas. Soon British colonies settled in Jamestown Massachusetts. They needed supplies, this started the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange transported goods such as Sugarcane, Indigo, Rice, and Tobacco, between England, Africa, and the Americas.Tobacco, corn, animals and soon slaves, who replaced the indentured servants. Since slaves didn't have to be paid, farmers found it easier to have slaves rather than the indentured servants. In 1619 the first slave was brought to Jamestown to work tobacco. This allowed more people to work in the fields instead of picking seeds from cotton. This increased slavery exponentially because the fields could expand with less people picking seeds, since it only took one person to run the cotton gin. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson, decided to buy the Louisiana Purchase from the french. This brought along the conflict of where they would have slaves. As the north wasnt keen on slavery but the south pushed it strongly since they needed it to keep their businesses going. In 1819 Alabama became a slave state, and the newly acquired florida also became a slave
