Classical Conditioning Research Paper
Have you ever thought about manipulating another person to believe that something is present when it is not actually there? This can be easily done through the concept of classical conditioning. What is classical conditioning you may ask? Classical conditioning is a learning process in which a conditioned stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus. The conditioned stimulus is a neutral stimulus like the sound of a bell, the unconditioned stimulus is the object in which the neutral stimulus is associated with such as dog food, and the unconditioned response is a response to the unconditioned stimulus such as salivating. The subject, the dog, is presented with the unconditioned stimulus (the food) which causes the unconditioned response …show more content…
We often used to try and feed the cattle all at once, however the task seemed impossible when the cattle are spread anywhere around the 180-acre farm. To make feeding easier we had to come up with a way in which we could get all the cows together at once. I would place loose feed in the back of my truck and honk the horn herding the cattle into one certain field. The cows have since been trained to either follow the truck or gather around where the truck is parked once the horn sounds. The cattle associate the sound of the horn with receiving food whether they are getting food or not. The cows also associate my truck specifically with food since my truck is the only one used when feeding and the sound of the horn from my truck as well.
The concept of classical conditioning is or can be used in almost everyone who owns a pet. Most every pet owner has some way that involves the interaction of stimuli between them and their pet or what they pet enjoys. The concept has effect society in ways that offer support and deception. Classical conditioning can be used to deceive a subject into believe something that is not actually

A neutral stimulus (such as a bell) which normally wouldn’t produce a response (such a salivating) eventually becomes paired with another stimulus (such as the food) this is referred to an unconditional response. When the bell and food (unconditional stimulus) are paired often enough the dogs start to salivate as soon as they hear the bell and before the food is served. When this occurs conditioning has taken place. (Cited in Burns 1995) Pavlov argued that if dogs could be conditioned to salivate then it is possible to apply the process to bodily process that effect illness and mental health disorders. Nowadays classical conditioning is applied in the treatment of phobias and in aversion therapies.(Cited in Burns 1995).…

Classical conditioning was a theory developed by a Russian psychologist called Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936). He was working with dogs to investigate their digestive systems. The dogs were attached to a harness and Pavlov attached monitors to their stomachs and mouths so he could measure the rate of salivation. He noticed that the dog began to salivate when someone entered the room with a bowl of food, but before the dog had eaten the food. Since salivation is a reflex response, this seemed unusual. Pavlov decided that the dog was salivating because it had learned to associate the person with food. He then developed a theory. Food automatically led to the salivation response, since this response had not been learned, he called this an unconditioned response, which is a response that regularly occurs when an unconditioned stimulus is presented. As food automatically leads to this response, he called this unconditioned stimulus, which is a stimulus that regularly and consistently leads to an automatic response. Pavlov then presented food at the same time as ringing a bell (neutral stimulus), to see if the dog would learn to associate the bell with food. After several trials, the dog learned that the bell was associated with food and eventually it began to salivate only when the bell was rung and no food was presented. It therefore has learned the…

Classical conditioning is defined as ‘’ a learning process by which a subject comes to respond in a specific way to a previously neutral stimulus after the subject repeatedly encounters the neutral that already elicits the response’’ (Freedictonary.com, 2013). Classical conditioning involves forming a link between two stimuli having a learned response as a result. There are three stages in which this happens Stage one: Before conditioning, Stage two: During conditioning and Stage three: After conditioning. Stage one includes a repetitive stimulus, which will automatically get a response. This is called a naturally occurring stimulus (NS) For example, salivating to the smell of food is a naturally occurring stimulus. Stage two the process of…

Classical conditioning is a type of learning in which a potent stimulus obtains the ability to evoke an innate response that was originally elicited by a neutral stimulus. In classical conditioning, a UR is an event that occurs naturally in response to some stimuli. On the other hand, a UR is the stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response without learning. A CS in classical conditioning is an originally neutral stimulus that, through learning, comes to be associated with some unlearned responses. Finally, a CR is the learned response to the originally neutral but now conditioned stimulus (CITE BOOK). These are the basic components involved in classical conditioning. Classical conditioning theory was first discovered and described…

Learning is more than a person sitting at a desk and studying off a book. Everything that we do is a result of what we have learned. We respond to things that happen to us, we act and experience consequences from our behavior, and we observe what others say and do. Psychologists explain our many experiences with basic learning processes.…

Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are learning styles associated with human behavior. According to Kowalski and Westen, (2011) “Classical conditioning is a procedure by which a previously neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response after it is paired with a stimulus that automatically elicits that response” (Kowalski & Westen, 2011, p. 164). Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist studied the digestive system of a canine, when he came across the discovery of classical conditioning (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). In this learning experiment, he noticed that the canine salivated at the sign of food (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). The canine engaged in salivating when the food was present by a ringing of a bell (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). This experiment led to the canine salivating at the ringing of the bell even if there were no foods present (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). Psychologists refer to this as classical conditioning (Kowalski & Westen, 2011, p. 164). Counter…

By definition, classical conditioning refers to conditioning in which the conditioned stimulus is paired with and precedes the unconditioned stimulus until the conditioned stimulus alone is sufficient to elicit the response (Merriam-Webster, 2013). As a general concept, classical conditioning assists organisms in learning which stimuli signals are conducive to survival and which stimuli signals are detrimental to survival (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). As an example imagine that you decide to attend a road trip. You decide to have a fruit snack while traveling. The twisting and turning in your travels causes motion sickness and creates nausea. This leads to nausea every time you come in contact with a fruit snack, which leads to an avoidance of fruit snacks. This is a form of classical conditioning. Classical conditioning has been debatable in the science of psychology for years. It is the intension of this paper to describe, explore, analyze, and summarize the theory of classical conditioning. In this quest, the author also intends to hypothetically apply the theory of classical conditioning, including charts and explanations.…

Classical conditioning was first used by Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist. “Classical conditioning was the first type of learning to be studied systematically” (Kowalski & Westen, 2009). Classical conditioning occurs when there is an interaction between two different stimuli, environmental and a naturally occurring stimulus. There are four different types of processes that can be associated with classical conditioning. They include: The unconditioned stimulus, the unconditioned response, the conditioned stimulus and the conditioned response. The most popular example of this is when Pavlov was studying dog’s digestive tracks and would ring a bell every…

Classical conditioning was one form of simple association. Pavlov made it clear during experiments that when a subject is given a stimulus and is then either punished or rewarded, the subject learns to associate the reward or punishment with that particular stimulus. Pavlov used hungry dogs that would begin to salivate when a tone was played. This happened because the dogs were always fed immediately after hearing the tone. This is classical conditioning.…

According to the National Institute of Mental Health in 2012, 30.5 % of people had arachnophobia– the fear of spiders ("Fear/Phobia Statistic," 2012). This fear was ranked third out of the top ten most common fears. Some people believe that this fear is learned by means of classical conditioning. If arachnophobia can be classically conditioned then there would need to be an unconditioned stimulus (UCS), an unconditioned response (UCR), a neutral stimulus (NS), a neutral response (NR), a conditioned stimulus (CS), and a conditioned response (CR). The unconditioned stimulus would be the feeling…
