Cliques In High School Cafeteria

In today’s society, school cafeterias are notorious for their cliques and the vicious members included in them. A clique by definition is a small group of people with similar interests and features who spend time with each other and do not allow others to join them. Cliques are prominent in high school cafeterias which create angst in nonmembers of the group. These views about cliques are not necessarily true. In today’s school environment there are several different types of cliques that have emerged. Some examples are athletes, academically inclined students, and gamers. Upon examining the different cliques in the school cafeteria, one can understand the reasons why students feel the need to congregate in groups with the same interests. With close observation, anyone would understand that many students sit with their compadres or amicable acquaintances during the lunch period. The reasons are: comfort in their peers, loyalty between each other, and a peace-filled table. Being able to sit with others who you know well is comforting. It would not be logical to wander away from the comfort to sit with others who you are unfamiliar with. On the other hand, high school is known for its unrelenting drama and the issues it creates. Based on the interviews, students prefer to congregate in groups that are loyal, which means less drama. After interviewing these students, a survey was created including the main reasons why students sit in cliques. Below is the survey that answers the question “why do you sit with the people you do at lunch?” In all, 34 students were surveyed.
