Case Study #1: Cloud Nine Financial Advisors
Based on my research about online stores like Ebay, Walmart and Amazon.com, I would definitely suggest that Mr. Layton invest on Dot-com stocks for it will bring many improvements in the company. The store is open, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Further, your customers are worldwide in reach, and can shop anytime that they want to. The target market would definitely be larger, since the information about the stocks that they’re selling would be published in the internet. According to the latest Nielsen Global Online Survey, more than 85% of the world's online population has used the internet to make a purchase - this is about 875 million people. this, even unmoving stocks in Cloud nine’s limited costumer could be of much interest to others. On the other hand, sellers in ebay for example, have to pay for listing the goods that they sell online. When the item sells, ebay does get a small percent of the final auction price but this depends on the price of the thing that you’re selling, nothing really compared to the profit that you get for selling the item.
As we all know, Cloud Nine provides its clients with a monthly newsletter to inform them about the stocks that they can buy or sell. There is nothing wrong with this kind of approach, but it needs lots of improvement specially when were dealing with a tentatively large market. The number of stocks listed in the newsletter is also limited compared to the listings that we can put online.
Amazon.com charges more compared to other online stores, but Unlike Ebay, instead of charging you for listing your things online, they do it only when you make the sale. Studies also show that Amazon is a more secure place to visit. The Wall Street Journal just did a comparison of the big three general merchandise sites: amazon.com, walmart.com and ebay.com. In their testing, the best overall experience for shoppers not necessarily always the lowest price was amazon.com. The second best was eBay and the third went to Walmart. Thus, I would recommend Amazon.com to Mr. Layton not just because it is at the top right now, but because it has a good future ahead of it, and we envision Cloud Nine to be part of that success.
Case Study #2: Global Hotels and Mommas
1st Scenario I will Allow Mommas to use the Information System of Global Hotel since it is a much larger company and would most likely have a better knowledge on how to improve this kind of business.
Advantages: ▪ Mommas would be more accessible to costumers since Global Hotel offers one stop online reservations. ▪ Greater operational efficiency by applying Global Hotel’s technology ▪ It will allow Mommas to enter related businesses, new geographic markets and gain new technological knowledge. ▪ Regular costumers of Global Hotel will have an idea on what Mommas is, and what it has to offer. ▪ Access to greater resources, including specialized customer support staff and technology
Disadvantages: ▪ Different management and information system styles can result in poor integration and co-operation. ▪ Since the I.S. used by Global is not designed specifically for Mommas, it may cause problems in the future. ▪ Costumers might find it confusing since they’re somehow used to the old system that Mommas had before. ▪ What’s good for a large company might not be the case for a small to medium sized business like Mommas.
2nd
Scenario I suggest that Momma’s should use its own Information System since it is specifically designed for their use, and would therefore make things easier for them.
Advantages: ▪ High certainty of quality service since they use a vertical reservation package which means it is specifically designed for their company’s use. ▪ Reducing the level of redundancy by having a vertical I.S. equates to cost-savings. ▪ They don’t need to undergo further training about a new information system. ▪ Their I.S. was made to specifically cater their range of business, like in this case Western Canada. ▪ The people using their I.S. already have the expertise in their current system. ▪ Easy access to their own data and information since their system is not integrated within Global Hotel.
Disadvantages: ▪ The potential growth of Mommas may be jeopardized by not exposing them to the global business community. ▪ For Global Hotel who just acquired Mommas, it’s quite difficult to maintain two kinds of I.S. when they can actually use one. ▪ It’s not financially wise for Global solutions to have to kinds of information system since it needs man power and technology to support and maintain. ▪ The information available for Mommas is only limited to the I.S. that they currently have.
