Girls on the Run is a not for profit organization with the mission of educating and preparing girls for a life-time of self-respect and healthy living. Girls on the Run celebrates each girl’s uniqueness and strives to teach young girls to appreciate the differences in others. I have worked with over 100 girls.
My goal is to help girls understand the power of their potential by setting a goal and working hard to achieve it. During the 10-week program, girls participate in various running activities that teach lifelong skills like compassion, …show more content…
standing up for themselves and others, being intentional, showing gratitude, connecting with others, and the power of diversity. The program culminates in a non-competitive 5K race event which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. I always provide genuine enthusiasm and positive encouragement for the young girls in the program.
I am a dedicated mentor and a positive role model to the young 4th grade girls that participate in the program. I help with the lessons on a consistent weekly basis and she I also serve as a running buddy for race day. While the program participants slowly build stamina and increase the distance they run over the course of the 10-week program, when it comes to race day, I provide supportive encouragement along the way. Rather than race competitively, I encourage the girls to strive for their own goals. I am enthusiastic, supportive, fun and patient with the girls on race day and make a connection with each girl that I work with.

Every summer, I volunteer at a summer lunch program at low income housing facilities.
During the school year, the children living there would have access to free or reduced lunch in their schools. However, due to budget cuts and the onset of summer, this lunch was no longer available to them. M I helped pack over two hundred bagged lunches each morning, and then traveled to various facilities to deliver the food. These meals were relatively simple, with a menu usually featuring ham sandwiches, bags of chips, juice boxes and cookies enclosed within brown paper bags. Yet, the grins of excitement on the children’s faces and murmured thanks from relieved mothers proved that my “simple” gesture had proved to be heartwarmingly complex. After distributing the lunches, the team of volunteers and I would linger and play games with the children there. A quick, fifteen minute round of kickball could easily escalate into an exciting hour-long tournament.
Eventually, we would pack up and leave, but the laughter and mirth of the kids continued to follow me as I traveled home. Volunteering in the lunch program showed me the true merit in helping others.
I have also volunteered at homeless shelters, shelters for foster children, and food
pantries.
