Mentoring and coaching are about supporting individuals. It has become a part of the everyday classroom contributing to increased test scores, personal achievements, and goals. With the increase of diversity in the classroom, as well as the changing classroom environment, mentoring and coaching have become essential components for teachers and students. “Mentoring is generally used to refer to a process by which a respected and competent individual provides guidance and advice, in order to assist someone less experienced develop in their work. Coaching refers to a more systematic process where one person takes another through an experiential learning cycle, with the intention of unlocking the individual’s potential to maximize their own performance.” (Winfield, 2011) Who benefits from coaching and mentoring? How do they benefit from coaching and mentoring? How can the school make coaching and mentoring more effective? How can you and your partners come together to achieve your goal? How can we use this in our internship and first year of teaching? Coaching and mentoring helps the school, the individual, and the coach or mentor. It helps the school by giving individuals greater ownership of their development and promotes an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. It strengthens culture and ethos. It assists in the transfer of teacher learning to pupil learning. Coaching and mentoring helps the individual by reducing feelings of isolation, increasing confidence, providing a high rate of learning, improving personal skills and problem analysis, reducing frustration, and creating friendships and an opportunity to reflect on work roles and career. This also helps the coach or mentor by improving problem analysis, raising awareness of different approaches, and improving self-esteem. How can the school make coaching and mentoring more effective?
