Many times, you will notice the land by the sea eating itself away with time. The term used to describe this event is called coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave actions, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage …show more content…
Coastal erosion is a factor to which it can reduce the amount of foot traffic in the state. Florida protecting the beaches from coastal erosion more aggressively can be good and bad for tourists. It is good in a sense which it widens the beach. A overly crowded beach will make tourist not want to stay. Tourists may notice a lot of equipment for beach nourishment and could be bothered by it. Big machines will be making loud noises throughout the day further push people away. As much of a burden it could be, beach construction is inescapable and promotes tourism growth. It shows the state is willing to upgrade certain parts for a more enjoyable stay in the future. Marshall (2011) states that “of highest visibility is the loss of revenue from the tourism industry due to the aesthetic impacts of coastal erosion (p. 4). Coastal erosion poses a threat to the value created by the tourism industry as well by decreasing traffic for businesses near the coastline. If beach nourishment isn't pushed, beaches for tourists could be gone. Beach nourishment is important for tourism when you also include protection from storms. The beach serves as a first defence to all the businesses and people. Tourism in Florida is also significant, where a loss of tourists could alter employment …show more content…
With coastal infrastructure at huge risks due to flooding and erosion due to dramatic climate change, it is crucial to stress the importance of coastal protection. The ports along the shoreline is also causing more trouble for Florida as it speeds up coastal erosion. Ports must find a way to lower coastal impact or more money will be spent on unnecessary maintenance. People are aware of the situation on beaches, but still contest more involvement due to how expensive procedures are. Many believe adding commodities to the already natural beach can intensify coastal erosion. The alternative is just to preserve the ecosystem as “mangroves and seagrass beds are able to grow upward as the sea level rises, and sediment accumulates, thus increasing, the resilience of the coasts” (Martinez, 2016, p. 1). A mangrove is a type of shrub that grows in coastal swamps and seagrass beds are a type of seaweed. A plant researchers used for a study was called Ipomoea pes-caprae. This specific plant was chosen because it grows on beaches and probably is in contact with the ocean's waves. The goal was to achieve a better understanding on how the dune plants react to waves, dunes and humans. The experiment was conducted on a wave flume, which is a special sort of wave tank. The results show that the vegetation strengthened the beach's profile. This experiment is proven successful, but introducing it to coastal habitats
