College Admissions Essay: My Journey Of Track
Felicia Lemos Mrs. Radford Scholarship Essay. Starting high school can be very unpredictable, and most of all in sports. When becoming a freshman, there are many differences coming from middle school sports to high school sports. In eighth grade you are a leader. Freshman year you're the underdog, and the seniors know they are the best because they are more experienced and have the most talent. Being one of the youngest pushed me to work harder than ever before. My journey of track showed me that being an underdog does not affect your skill in sports. I worked so hard to reach my goals, and with my perseverance I became one of the fastest people on the track team. The first day of track practice i remember vividly. My coach; Mr. Watson, was …show more content…

Watson came up to me and said, “Lemos, you want to be a sprinter?”, and I replied, “of course”. He told me right from the start it was not going to be easy because of the amount of competition I had to compete against. Although, I have never been afraid of hard work. Coach Watson, believed in my talent for running. With all of his guidance and my hard work, I accomplished my goal of qualifying for State Track. I was the only freshman to have the opportunity to race at state track. It was a huge accomplishment. I would have never thought that only as a freshman I would reach the skill level I did. I was very impressed with myself. Although, I did not reach that goal by myself, I had the support of my coaches the whole journey. Through the whole process, I learned the skill of hard work and dedication for something you want in life. I learned that I will never have anything just handed to me, and I need to work for everything I want in life. My accomplishment was achieved by my hard work and dedication to track and wanting to be one of the best. My freshman year of track is a lesson learned for my future, and most of all for my future in college. I was taught to never give up and to always have dedication to get to where you want to

You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different sports. I played baseball, football and later in life I started to swim competitively. In each case, I had to learn to take the responsibility to do my part—for myself and for my teammates. Practice was mandatory and took priority over other interests of mine. This was hard for me, since I missed out on school dances, family activities and other fun events because I had to be at practice everyday. It also forced me to learn good time management skills as I started to balance school, a social life, daily two-hour practices and games on the weekends. The coaches can only teach so much and, while they tried, couldn’t force me to learn my plays or study in my off time. I knew my hard work was paying off when my coach would say, “Good job Gunnar, I’m proud of you!” That one sentence made me realize that my hard work had paid off and that I should continue to work even harder, not only in sports but also in everything I…

In the short story “Becoming a Student Athlete”, Terry Telphy discusses some of the issues he encountered during his Freshman year in high school. He had a problem balancing being a great student and being a phenomenal athlete. He proudly revealed he excelled as a football player by committing extra time and effort to make sure he would make the team and be an impact player on the field. The summer before entering 9th grade, obviously he could balance the heavy load of being an athlete, but when the semester started and homework started piling up, he no longer could put all of his effort into sports and little into school. Terry wanted great things to happen in his life — He wanted to graduate high school, go to college, and did not want to…

John Wooden might have been the coach I needed when participating in Track and Field for my local high school in Madera, CA. Since it was the first and only high school sport I chose to take part in, mostly due to the fact my friends were on the team, I was unfamiliar with what a good coach was and if he or she would actually make an athlete out of me. Reading about Wooden’s dissatisfaction with society’ focus on grades rather than one’s effort and his choice to focus on developing his player’s bodies and minds rather than hounding them to win, I have realized that my Track and Field coach is also one of those men who would have us perform to the best of our ability and lose rather than give a lackluster performance and win simply because of…

“It was May 2016 at the state track meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I had just finished third in the 800-meter race. I left the track area, and Coach Kirby Patterson from UWA had approached me. She wanted me to come and visit UWA. I was excited because I knew I wanted to continue running track while in college, but I just did not know where. After visiting, I felt like it was the perfect place and opportunity for me to continue with my passion.”…

I had a really terrible memory when I was young, which was about a car accident. In the summer of 1995, I was 7 years old at that time,I was playing with my friends in the garden which was near my house. Suddenly, a friend of mine started fighting with a big guy. I didn’t know what happen, I was too young and so scared, the only thing I thought was to find his parents to go for help. So a girl and I decided to run to his home. The little girl was in front of me when we were crossing the road, and we didn’t realize a car was coming. The driver saw the girl first, so he turned right to avoid hitting her, but he didn’t know that there was another child coming out.…

The bus ride to Muscle Shoals High School felt like hours and hours while only minutes had passed. My stomach flipped ferociously like a gymnast on the vault. My friends were trying to hype me up, but I could only focus on the fear and shaking of my body. I was too afraid to move, but too prideful to act as though I was as nervous as I was. As my legs carried me onto the huge field where vibrant reds and blacks were flaunted over the walls and seats, I observed the very place I would spill all my hardwork and dedication and I began to grow anxious. “Just breathe” I told myself over and over and over. I was so busy arguing with myself that I barely noticed the loudspeaker singing my name. I walked to the field and slowly crouched like a lioness hunting her prey. POW. The gun went off and everything became normal to me. Running had become like breathing or eating or sleeping. I no longer feared the idea of failure, but yet embraced the idea of succeeding. I bolted across the finish line with many seconds between me and my opponents. Not only did I win the war within myself, but I helped my team win the entire meet. Everyone can win their battles, you just have to have the will and determination to do…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

I have been running since I started Modified Track and Field in the seventh grade. Running has been a part of my life ever since then. When I decided to join track I felt as though it was the worst mistake that I could have ever made, simply because i did not like running as a child. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. When I decided to join cross country team my freshman year, I never envisioned myself being a part of what would become known as “the best team in Hammonton history.” Three years ago, I finished the season as one of the very worst on the team, with no expectations being placed on me for the future. Fast forward to one month ago, when I along with my fellow six varsity teammates lead Hammonton to its first Atlantic County Championship in school history. While much of my improvement can be attributed to my physical growth over the years, I would have never reached that level of success if I did not realize how important it is to maximize my effort in everything that I do. My success in Cross Country was not as much caused by my physical development, but more so by the evolution of my mentality.…

Along with administering health care, my main goal for working in this setting is to be a positive influence in students’ lives and give back to the community by making the athletes that I serve into leaders. Being a leader and equipping others with the ability to become leaders is a passion of mine. What many people fail to notice is that this is a crucial time for many students as they attempt to grow into adults and not all coaches and athletic trainers seize the moment to support them along their journey. I want to be able to make an impact on students’ lives and change their…

My life started out like the beginning of a perfect childhood. Both of my parents had steady, well-paying government jobs, we had moved into a new home and even bought a puppy. All was harmonious, until my parents decided we would have a better life in Canada. Leaving behind everything and everyone we knew was probably one of the hardest things my parents ever did for my brother and me. Struggling to fit in and assimilate was least of our problems, trying to make a decent income became a priority. My parents, who were well educated and accomplished, were compelled to settle for multiple meager jobs like a cashier at a fast food restaurant or a security guard at an apartment building. They held as many jobs as they could, working…
