College Athletes Should Be Paid

Mason Cole, a freshman on the starting offensive line for the University of Michigan, doesn’t get paid to play football. Johnny Manziel, a player from the Cleveland Browns, gets paid $420,000 a year. If college athletes were paid it could be the difference between a “Big 10” college team that pays a lot or a less popular division that doesn’t pay much at all. Most people believe that college student athletes should be paid for playing a collegiate sport while going to school. Social media is reining over our lives nowadays with the glamorous lives of professional athletes fancy cars, houses, and clothes. That is every collegiate athletes goal, to play sports and make a lot of money doing it. College Athletes being paid is debatable. So, should college athletes be paid or not? The most popular viewpoint of this topic is for college athletes to be paid for their talents on the field, court, rink, or swimming pool. College students should be
paid because they spend a lot of extra time practicing. The athletes also run the risk of getting injured and potentially ruining their future careers in the professional sport industry. Student athletes that are paid will work harder to earn that salary at the end of the week. Most college students that do not play a sport have jobs and sports prohibit athletes from getting jobs. Therefore, they cannot earn a salary. By paying athletes the schools can attract better players to their schools as well. College athletes should not be paid.
If college athletes were paid there wouldn’t be nearly as much money for the sport department itself because all of the money would go to paying the players. And there would be bias from popular sports like basketball and football between the least popular sports like field hockey and swimming. The more popular sports would get more money and the least popular sports would be left hanging to dry. College coaches get paid a lot and the players see that and tend to be greedy about money. Players behavior could change ad a result of the salaries as well, and not for the better. Its not a good idea to pay college players because if ne school pays more than another they player will be faced between the school he likes better and the school that pays more. And isn’t a college scholarship payment enough? I mean they are getting paid to go to school for free and they want to be paid on top of that? College students wanted to go to college to get a higher education; not to get paid to go to
school. If college athletes are paid, whoever pays them will not be able to stop or there will be riots. If the schools do not make enough for their teams, then the programs will stop or they will not be as regulated or pretentious as they once were. If players get paid they will get greedy and player might jus go to schools for the money and not if they actually like the school they are attending. This will be disastrous for the sports programs. Look at the NFL. The players act out and get into trouble when they have a lot of money. The NFL doesn’t have the greatest reputation right now. Do you want the same for college sports?
