of successful people who in fact, did not have a college education. What comes to mind when you think of Steve Jobs? You would probably think, “Wow, Steve Jobs is such a successful man”. Yes, you are completely right if you thought something along those lines. He was the co-founder of Apple and his net worth was $11 billion at the time of his death. Now that is impressive for a college dropout. “Richard Branson's net worth is said to be roughly $4.9 billion. Founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Records, Virgin Mobile and other Virgin brands, Branson never completed high school, and dropped out at 16 years of age. Not only that, but he was dyslexic and had poor academic performance.” (Smale) You could definitely say that Branson is a successful man. Those are just two small examples of people who did not have to attend college to define what they were capable of in life. Those two examples do not even put a dent in the many others who are also successful without college degree. There can be a few reasons that people do not attend college. One specific reason, would be that they are just not college material. “If they were, 54% of all Americans who enroll into college wouldn’t eventually become dropouts.” (Penzo) If you truly feel that college is not for you, it is important to not waste time or money at college. If you feel you will be more successful without a college degree, then do not become in debt by attending many years in a university. Like stated before, many people, especially high schoolers feel so much pressure upon them. Everybody is asking what your plans are after high school. They feel pressure to make rash decisions on what they will major in and where they will go. Except, they do not even know if that is their true calling in life. Many young kids feel like they will be a disappointment if they do not attend college. It is wrong that they can feel this way. We should never make anyone feel bad, or less than because they are not making the same decisions we made. It is important we encourage those who are not college material, to find where they belong in life.
Let’s be completely honest here, it can be hard to find a job with no college degree.
The word hard, does not mean impossible though. It also may not be the greatest paying job. Yet, when it comes to money and your passion in life, you have a choice to make. Will you have an amazing paying job but be miserable with that job, or will you have an ok paying job, but absolutely love it. If you happen to be good with computers, you could be a computer support specialist. Did you know that they get paid about $61,830 a year? That is not bad for a job with no college degree! An MRI Technologist makes about $67,900 a year. You can even become a dental hygienist for about $71,520 a year. (Snider) For someone with no college degree, that is some impressive money. See, I told you that it is possible to get a good paying job with no college degree. There are so many different options when it comes to what you will be in life. Do not let someone else decide for you. Decide for yourself, and decide to pick something that you will love. Let it not be for the excessive amount of money. Money may make you happy for a little while, but in long run, if you hate your job, you will not be truly happy. Let it be for your passion and something you are truly gifted in. If you hate the idea of college, or have no desire to go, I do not judge you. I encourage you to search for what it is that you would like to be. If whatever you pick, makes you happy, then you will be successful no matter the pay
check each week.
