At Front Street School they follow New York State Common Core Curriculum. At Front Street School two of the main Common Core Curriculum is based on Mathematics and ELA (English Language Arts). They specially use Engage NY. The Common Core Curriculum for ELA is designed to help students build the background knowledge and vocabulary based off of by listening and reading comprehension. These skills that Common Core force students to know are called decoding skills. These decoding skills are skills that students will need in the future for independent reading. These skills build the requisite decoding and comprehension skills that comprise fluent, mature reading. The teachers at Front Street School provide instruction and practice in each given unit as needed. For Math, teachers provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. These foundations that are taught, help young students to build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and procedures. At Front Street School teachers stress not only procedural skills but also conceptual understanding. This is done to make sure students are learning and absorbing the critical information they need to succeed at a high level (Engage NY, n.a.).

Assessment is for learning. Assessment is an outgoing process that arises out of the interaction between teaching and learning. At Front Street School students are required by the State to take the New York State Exams. These exams take place once a year. Students in all grades take examinations administered by the State. In grades 3rd-8th they take the New York State Math, ELA, and Science. These tests are aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and Core Curriculum (New York State Assessment,
