In Communicating Effectively, Hybels and Weaver II, discuss the factors that influence a person’s ability to bid and respond to bids. The three factors are a function of the way people process feelings, how feelings were handled in the home and a person’s emotional communication skills. Mike describes each of these factors and how they relate to one another. He shares the importance of knowing each of …show more content…
Mike introduced this concept with a drawing that modeled the brain. From a biological standpoint, he broke down the parts of the brain and their functions. He started with the first layer, the reptilian brain and points out that it is free from any emotional activity. Instead, it controls our basic survival instincts, including our fight/flight/freeze responses. The next layer was the mammalian brain and he called it our emotional mind, which is responsible for our feelings. Finally, the third layer was the human brain, which is responsible for thinking, creating meaning out of emotions and events. With the model of the brain, he showed that the brain processes information from the bottom, up. So the human brain is the last layer to receive and process information before going through the reptilian and mammalian brain. With a basic understanding of how the brain functions he was then able to explain how the brain could be affected and derivate from this process. Mike gave a scenario to show a deviation and not everyone’s brain functions in the same way. The example he gave was about sociopaths and he explained how their brain's mirror neurons do not function properly which causes a lack of empathy. Because of the way their brain processes these feelings or lack thereof, their emotional connections are very weak and leads to a poor bid/response
