Michael sits on the table with his arms folded; he listens attentively for his name to be called out as the teacher does the register. When Michaels name is called out he puts his right hand up and says “Morning Miss Bowden”.
Michael leans over the table and takes out a pencil from the stationary box (which is in the middle of the table), using his right hand.
Time 9.05 am / setting in the classroom on the registration tables- reading time
Michael opens up the book in front of him and looks at the book whilst turning the pages. The teacher tells Michael to “read the book and not just look at it, “and Michael replies that he has read this book before, so the teacher tells Michael to go and change his book.
Michael gets up from the chair and walks towards the books inside the classroom and looks at a few different books by moving them in order and then chooses the fourth book in.
Time 9.20 am / setting in the classroom on the literacy table- phonics activity
The teacher instructs the children to find better words than “said” that we can replace it with. The teacher asks Michael “what do you do when you want to tell your friend something but don’t want anybody to hear?” he replies “I would whisper in his ear”, the teacher praises him and says well done. The teacher asks how else do we talk? Michael replies “sometimes we shout at people when we are angry”, he turns around and looks at the girl next to him and says “I found an autumn leaf”!
Time 9.35 / setting in the classroom in the silent study corner- one to one reading
Michael reads well to the teacher up to page 5, when he finds it difficult to pronounce the word “catch” so the teacher tells him to sound it out. Michael sounds the word and says out loud “c-a-t-ch” and manages to pronounce it right. The teacher asks what the creature is on the page. He replies “it’s a moth”!
