Compare And Contrast Christianity And Abrahamic Religions
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are the three major religions in the world. Amongst the three beliefs there are almost four billion followers. Our past history shows that countries, and regions within countries have identified themselves with one of the three religions. In many cases, the countries identifying or attempting to identify with a specific religion resulted to tension, and wars. The three religions are usually referred to as Abrahamic religions because they all claim Abraham as an important pillar of their faith. The three religions have many similarities, and have been spread in similar ways throughout history. The culture in which these religions were developed affected the theories and practices that differ in these religions. …show more content…
Within the Muslim faith they believe in one god they call Allah. On the other hand, Jews believe in one god whose name is Yahweh. Lastly, the Christian faith believe of one god in three distinct persons, which are the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. They also have different positions when it comes to salvation. The Muslims believe that you can only be saved if they follow the five pillars of faith, and through their deeds. Christians make it easy either you believe in Jesus Christ or not, those who do will receive salvation. Muslims, Christians, and Jews have very different beliefs concerning Jesus. Christians have faith that Jesus, the son of God, was born of Virgin Mary. The Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet, who was ascended into heaven. To the Jews, Jesus was considered as a normal Jew, who was born into a normal family. Christians and Jews disagree the most when it comes to who “Jesus” is, it has been said that “Judaism does not believe that Jesus was the Messiah… Christianity teaches that God became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ so he could lay down his life to pay the price of our sins. Judaism strongly denies the Jesus was God or that such a sacrifice was necessary” (GotQuestions). All three of these religions believe the Jesus will come again in some form for a second time.     Judaism and Christianity developed on the basis of obeying god, adherence to his rules and intention, and their faithful fulfillment. Since the fulfillment of God’s will is a duty of a Jewish or Christian person, both religions fall into the rule-deontological category. Although each sect has a different perspective on teaching and beliefs, they have one common thread: the belief in a singular deity. Both religions are monotheistic with a holy text and both strive to conquer evil. The origin of theses religions both come from the Middle East: Judaism coming from the tribe of Judah (one of the 12 sons of Jacob) and Christianity from Jesus’ title “Christos”, which is Greek for Messiah. Each religion is very similar with only some of the beliefs and teaching being different. In Judaism, God is seen as having a contracted relationship with the Jewish people, where they must obey his holy laws in return for their status of the chosen people. In parts of the Old Testament, God shows mercy and forgiveness, and in later interpretations of God’s laws, such as the Ten Commandments, are followed not only out of loyalty to God, but also because of their high moral character. In Christianity, the emphasis is placed on the love of God rather than obeying his will. People much believe that God is merciful and loves them as well. As a reflection of God’s love, people must also love one another and forgive their enemies. Christians practice peace and non-violence, return good for evil, and love for suffering (“turn the other cheek”). They also give separate messages to outsiders as to what the religions stand for. Christians basically just sin, repent, and then are forgiven for their sins, whereas Judaism is a system of sanctification in which all is to be subsumed under God’s rule.
