Engel then thought of a way to bring this subject up. He thought to bring the situation up to several other parents that had their children attending the public schools in New York, attention about the concern and issue he had with what he witnessed. The group of parents understood where he was coming from. It then became a concern to them to and they all agreed that they needed to do something about it. They also agreed that this was an issue and they were willing and wanted to back up Mr. Engel behind this serious event that then later would become a historical event that they did not suspect to happen. “Engel and four other parents -- two Jews, an atheist, a Unitarian, and another Protestant -- complained that the prayer was "contrary to the beliefs, religions, or religious practices of both themselves and their children." Public schools or public school teachers are no longer allowed to encourage praying in public schools but they are also not allowed to not let a child pray if they please. Private schools that are religion based are allowed to encourage and most of the time require children pray. They would not be going against the constitution. Today in schools all we say is the Pledge of Allegiance and even then you are not required to stand and say the Pledge. Engel made public schools have to follow more rules and requirements. So that it would be open to the public, which means it is open to Christians, Jews, Atheists, etc. Without feeling uncomfortable for the free education that is there for them for a reason. Steven Engel did this all with help of the Constitution and the first amendment. He changed the school system all over the United States from that point
