I am interested in both Finance and HR, therefore I have interviewed two successful professionals in these fields or work. I interviewed Derek Byrne, Certified Public Accountant and Tax Auditor and Vanessa Veldman, HR Generalist at Argos. While interviewing both professionals I noticed both similarities and differences in their career path and their skills and abilities which make them successful in their job.
Both Derek and Vanessa received a third level education, Derek obtained his degree at College of Commerce Rathmines and Griffith College Dublin and went on to complete the exams as prescribed by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Vanessa attended National College Ireland and received a B.A Degree in Human Resource Management. Both have very similar backgrounds in terms of education but they are working different types of organisations. Derek is a sole trader having worked at various accountancy practices in Dublin, in March 1993 he decided to open his own practice. Whereas Vanessa works for the UK owned company Argos.

The advantages a SME has over a multinational would be that they can be more flexible, employee’s job descriptions are broader than larger companies as employees have the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and take on more duties and responsibilities. Another advantage would be the customer interaction, in a SME every customer is important, unlike large companies, SMEs have the opportunities to build and maintain relationships with their customers.
