The first country to set off the dawn of discovery was Portugal, sponsored by Prince Henry, where they explored the west coast of Africa. Later Portugal successfully ventured around the southern tip of Africa and found a new sea route to India by Vasco de Gama. Portugal also discovered and colonized Atlantic Islands where they set up plantations, facilitated by slavery.
Wanting to follow Portugal’s success, the Spanish Monarchs financed an expedition to explore western trade routes to Asia. Unfortunately, Columbus did not discover those new routes but did discover lands in the new world - Bahamas, Hispaniola, Cuba and Central America.
