One example of the theme is seen when Miles decides to go and apologize to Lara for ignoring her ever since Alaska’s death. In order to do this he had to be pressured into thinking of how Alaska would feel. Knowing she would frown upon the way he avoided his girlfriend, on page 192 he showed up to lara’s door to ask for forgiveness, “I’m sorry… For ignoring you… for everything” This was impactful as it let Lara back into his life as a comfort and support, and also gave him peace of mind. Finally, an amazing representation of the theme can be found at the very end of the novel. Immediately before Takumi left for Japan, he left Miles a note to read. In the letter he confessed to seeing Alaska the night of her death, as she sat at the phone booth crying. Takumi knew what the Colonel and Miles were unsure of - where Alaska was headed the night of her death. On page 217 Takumi confesses, “ I tried to talk to her, but she was in a hurry. I just needed you to answer the phone, and you did.” Not only was Mrs.Halter important for Miles, but the information shared between them was important for a reader to gain perspective. As seen through the novel, Dr.Hyde and his lessons were crucial to the students at culver creek. Dr.Hyde changed his final report question, to reflect Alaska’s own curiosity. On page 158 he proposed the new question, “How will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?” With such an impactful lesson, Dr.Hyde forced students to examine themselves and the world around them. With that, he helped Miles Halter end his search for Alaska’s true death, and find peace and joy in her spirit that continues to live through personal memories. As one can see, along with Mrs.Halter, Dr.Hyde was a small character with great
