Majority of his poems for silly such as his poem “How not to dry dishes” and others had some very important meaning behind them. A few for example from his books, "No teacher, preacher, parent, friend or wise man can decide what's right for you - just listen to the voice that speaks inside." (Silverstein, 1996, p. 38), "Draw a crazy picture, write a nutty poem, sing a mumble-gumble song, whistle through your comb. Do a loony-goony dance ‘cross the kitchen floor, put something silly in the world that ain’t been there before." (Silverstein, 1981, p. 19), and "Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be." ( Silverstein, 1974, p. 37). These show how Silverstein knew how to get to kids and show them some knowledge, rather it was about getting out of dishes, to learning to be themselves. “These are the hopes, concerns, insecurities and conflicts that children’s literature deals with so well.” (The Editors, 2011) This is where he really was starting to get big and everyone was knowing who Shel SIlverstein was. From his smooth rhymes to his interesting rhyme scheme, he will always be one of the most unique poets in all of time. Some would say it is hard to be successful at being a poet, or an author, or even a musician; yet Silverstein manage to do all three at once. Silverstein really did change the way children poetry is being written. Silverstein’s poems have been apart of many children’s lives throughout growing up and being in school. Most could even say they learned something from Silverstein. Silverstein seemed like he wanted everyone young or old to take something from his poems or realization from his poetry. Shel always saw the interesting, crazy, wonderful things in life he communicated through his song, poetry, or his drawings.
