Comparing Inchcape Rock And The Necklace
The ironic tales of Inchcape Rock and The Necklace are very good stories. Inchcape Rock, by Robert Southey, is a tale of a spiteful pirate that by sinfully taking down a warning bell, spells his own demise. The Necklace, by Guy de Maupassant, is a tale of a lady who just didn’t know when to quit spending and who didn’t know when to tell the truth.

Both of the stories, Inchcape Rock and The Necklace, are quite ironic. In the Inchcape Rock, an evil pirate who was full of hatred took the warning bell off of a deadly rock in the sea. For some reason, he had wanted to, “plague the Abber of Abrathok,” by cutting down the warning bell that the Abber had once placed. Unfortunately for the pirate, later in the story, his ship sunk when it struck

In the late 1800’s there was tension between the North and South. It soon got worse when Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860. Soon after he won the election the southern states seceded from the Union, and then started the Civil War. The reason the Union won the Civil War was because of the technological advances such as weapons, railroads, and creation of the telegraph. Weapons were helped by advances in technology because it gave shooting more distance and velocity, “minie ball” bullets, and advancements in rifles.…

The most important literary term that is used most often out of all of the stories is situational irony. Situational irony is when the opposite of what one expects to happen occurs. The situational irony was all about Madame Forestier’s necklace that Madame Loisel lost. At the end of the story, Madame Loisel, who despised hard work and everything in the world that is not glamorous, finds out that she had given up her life to replace her friends necklace that she eventually discovers is only a fake. When Madame Loisel decided to tell Madame Forestier about how she lost her necklace, the reader expected Madame Forestier to be upset. But, instead, we all found out that Madame Forestier’s original necklace was only a fake and was worth hardly anything…

For example, Ambrose Bierce's short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" has very ironic elements to it. Just about the whole story itself is quite ironic. Peyton Farquhar, the main charter, is being hung. In the seconds of dying, he stretches the couple of seconds out into a long-lasting dream. He imagines himself swimming away while dodging bullets, and then he gets into the forest where he must make a long and miserable trip back to his house. Just as he is about to reach his wife's arms his neck breaks and he dies, but he didn't die there, he died long ago at the bridge. Bierce makes you truly think that Farquhar has escaped from death, but just as you think you are going to witness a happy ending, you figure out Peyton Farquhar has died at Owl Creek Bridge.…

It’s the eighteenth century, there are cold blooded, money hungry, dishonest pirates and proper honest english men, both want treasure and will get it whatever the cost. Jim Hawkins, a young english man joins in this hunt for riches, because of the drunken Billy Bones who first introduced Jim to this world of pirates. Without the creation of Billy Bones, Jim would never learn about Long John Silver. After Billy Bones’ death Jim goes on a hunt for Treasure island with no other than Long John Silver, the very pirate Billy Bones tells Jim to look out for. When Jim and Long John reach the island, the way Jim describes it foreshadows that there will be trouble on the island. Robert Louis Stevenson very cleverly employs foreshadowing to introduce…

Which story, "Lamb of the Slaughter" or "The Necklace", does a better job of showing situational irony? She tries her best to have this image of being wealthy when in reality she is broke. Both stories do a good job of showing situational irony ,but "The Necklace", does a way better job. In the "Lamb of the Slaughter", they have about two or three examples of irony. Although Blackbeard is seen to some as the scum of the earth, he became one of the most famous pirates in the world by stealing people’s treasures, obliterating their lives, and robbing them of their happiness. Blackbeard, also known as Edward Teach, was born around 1680 in Bristol, United Kingdom (Thoughtco.com, 1). Teach saw a lot of action as a child during Queen Anne’s War which lasted from 1702 - 1713 (Thoughtco.com). Being a curious young man, he decided to become a privateer under Queen Anne. A privateer was given permission to challenge and fight enemy ships. Privateers are pirates that have legal consent to fight enemies from their country.…

Edgar Allan Poe the father of the detective genre wrote a multitude of stories with ironic twists and turns the three I have chosen to write about are The Cask of Amontilado,The Tell Tale Heart, and The Masque of The Red Death. Each of these has specific points of irony and other more subtle parts. The Cask of Amontilado is of course about a man who murders another by convincing him he has a rare wine and convincing his victim that they are good friends and he should trust him only to murder him. The Tell Tale Heart is actually a note written by a murder trying to convince the reader that he is quite sane even though he killed and dismembered a man whom he actually liked for nothing more than having a “Vultures eye.” And finally…

He got the name “Blackbeard” because of his large black beard that almost covered his entire face. Before a battle he plaited his beard into small pigtails tied with colored ribbons. In these pigtails he placed and lighted long, slow burning matches that were usually used to set off a cannon. Since Blackbeard had such a tall and mighty physique, the smoke that curled out and around his face gave him a devilish appearance. In addition with his smoking face, he carried pistols, daggers, and a cutlass in his belt. Across his chest he also carried six cocked, ready to fire pistols. With all the weapons and crewmembers, Blackbeard petrified the people along Carolina and Virginia coasts in his ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge taking mostly valuables, rum, and weapons from other ships that crossed his path. He also captured ships in the harbor and seized citizens for ransom. “It is said that Blackbeard in battle array was an awesome sight and, to sailors of the day, as feared as the devil himself, to which many believed him akin.” (Pirates and Privateers) To prove his ruthlessness, Blackbeard stirred things up by lighting pots of sulfur in his own ship, or even shooting off pistols beneath the table while entertaining friends in his cabin. He mostly did these kinds of things when action was slow, and he was restless. Many of his crewmembers were quite scared of him, fearing…

"How little a thing is needed for us to be lost or to be saved?" Both stories, Maupassant's "The Necklace" and "A Story of an Hour" by Chopin portray two different yet alike women, who refuse to accept their destiny and deny the life of women of their class. They are both lost, and are looking to be saved, however, they find themselves in a big trouble just when they think they succeeded in their search. Nature plays a major role in both of these women's lives. Both struggle to find their independence and the endings of their stories are both triumphant, tragic and ironic.…

The necklace by Guy Maupassant is a story about a woman who was pretty and charming but she married poor. She wasn’t satisfied with her life and always wanted to live like the rich. Her husband did all he could to keep her happy. One day he brought home an invitation to attend a ball hoping this will delight his wife since she like to be fancy and rich. However his wife almost turned down the invitation because she didn’t have anything to wear. He was able to get her new clothing for the ball and to finish her outfit she borrowed a diamond necklace from a friend to wear to the ball. They had a great time at the ball however she lost the diamond necklace. She and her husband had to work hard and spend all their life savings to replace the necklace. At the end of the story, the woman ran into her friend she borrowed the necklace from and learned that it was a fake necklace instead of real diamonds. This is a very entertaining story and the writer was able to make the readers understand the deep and hidden meaning of events and because of that I agree that Maupassant ultimate goal is achieved through symbolism.…
