Comparing Paul Costa And Robert Mccrae's 'Inventory'
In the 70’s, two research teams created the Big 5 Inventory. These teams were Paul Costa and Robert McCrae from the National Institutes of Health, and Warren Norman and Lewis Goldberg from the Universities of Michigan and Oregon. The purpose of this assessment was to define one’s personality traits without biasness from culture, language, or background. The 5 traits were founded throughout a combination of the teams’ research data (Potter, Big5). The Big 5 tailored a variety of traits and characteristics to fit into 5 broad personality factors to help define an individual. These factors are OCEAN: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Openness to experience is inventive and curious versus consistent and cautious. A person who scores high on openness may be seen as lacking attention or unpredictable in behaviors, while individuals who score low on openness tend to be gratified by determination and are considered to be realistic and stable. Conscientiousness is effective and organized versus laid-back and careless. Those individuals who score high on conscientiousness tend to be prepared and reliable while those who score low can be seen as lacking responsibility and spontaneous. …show more content…
Those who score high on extraversion can be a bit overbearing while those who score low tend to be introverted and reserved, which tends them to be seen as self-centered. Agreeableness is sociable and caring versus stubborn and detached. Individuals who score high on agreeableness tend to be too trusting and inexperienced while those who score low tend to have a competitive nature and be seen as sketchy or confrontational. Neuroticism is sensitive and nervous versus secure and confident. Those who score high on neuroticism tend to be calm but can be viewed as lacking concern or effort, while those who score low tend to be outgoing and lively

    In the first assessment tool “What Is My Basic Personality?” the focus was on the five-factor model of personalities which are-extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience. Based off this evaluation, my basic personality indicates that I am moderately extroverted because I scored a ten. My conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience scores were high with a score of fifteen. My personality does indicate that I am someone who is agreeable because I scored thirteen. According to the analysis and interpretation, a high agreeableness and conscientiousness score indicates someone who “is good-natured, cooperative, and trusting” (Robbins, 2007 pg.9). A high conscientiousness score represents “someone who is responsible, dependable, persistent, and achievement oriented” (Robbins, 2007 pg.9). Finally, a high openness to experience score signifies someone who is “imaginative, artistically sensitive, and intellectual” (Robbins, 2007 pg 9). My score indicates that I have a positive emotional stability level, conscientious and openness to experience. However, extraversion and agreeableness were moderate scores which imply that I can improve in these areas.…

    After reviewing the “Trait Theories” in chapter four, specifically the “Big Five”, I have come to learn that researchers believe that personalities can be described and evaluated in five traits.
