The theme of the story “The Scarlet Ibis” is that you should not try to change someone from who they are and you should see them for what kind of person they are. It is like the theme of the story “The Sniper” where you should not let war change you and not see a person for who they really are. The theme of the story “The Scarlet Ibis” is that the older brother loves his younger brother, but his pride, causes a conflict between the two emotions he feels for his brother. The brother's motivations to help Doodle; his love encourages kindness, but his shame at Doodle's failing results in the cruelty that kills the younger boy.
