Comparison Of Powerlifting And Crosslifting
Powerlifting and CrossFit are both high intensity training methods in the US that combine for an annual income of 14 billion in 2015 alone. These sports have a training regimen that include free weights, increasing performance while gaining strength, as well as cardio vascular activity. Although both sports are based on athletes performing at high levels, the activities in which they engage in vary. Powerlifting for instance dates back as far as the Greek and Roman era which has allowed the sport to be perfected in todays’ day in age. CrossFit is relatively new, since it was founded in the early 2000’s. Powerlifters have multiple platforms in which they can compete in. These events include the Olympics, Strongman Competition, or the International Powerlifting Federation(IPF) to name a few. While these are not the only events held for powerlifters, they’re the most popular competitions known. The Olympics and IPF hold various exercise competitions but the most common amongst them are the bench press, squat and deadlift. The Strongman competition is more modern and varies because it includes events such as pull cars by rope, log press and truck pulling. All which incorporate the three main exercises in some way or another. CrossFit has it’s playing field which has grown in numbers since its startup in the 2000’s. The CrossFit games are held every summer and are open worldwide to competitors from around the world, male or female. The competition is composed of trail runs, ocean swims, various repetitions of different exercises spread out throughout the day for five consecutive days. Powerlifting gyms can vary from commercial fitness centers to smaller private clubs. These usually consist of an area to bench press, a squat rack, and dumbbells to name a few basics. Commercial gyms typically have a help desk as you enter to ensure safety for everyone who enters. They also usually have personal trainers, some type of obnoxious music and mirrors that cover nearly every wall. Many of these gyms will offer fitness plans, offer meal plans and protein shakes made there to help you on your fitness journey. CrossFit gyms have one commonality with powerlifting gyms, a squat rack. Although the squat racks at these gyms are different because of the different exercises that will be performed with the equipment. Many CrossFit gyms has squat racks that are all interconnected so that the athletes can simultaneously squat and do pull-ups with minimal rest in between. These gyms generally don’t have much traditional equipment because they do more body weight exercises. Most gyms have a large amount of open space to do body weight exercises, band-work, and aerobic exercises.     CrossFit’s program has become a competitive sport and has transformed average people into “the toughest athletes on Earth.” These toughest athletes then compete against each other in the CrossFit Games. The goal of the CrossFit Games “is to find the fittest athletes, not to produce an easily replicable workout program.” The CrossFit Games are divided into three sections: the Open, Regionals, and the Reebok CrossFit Games. The first section, the Open, athletes as young as fourteen years old can participate in the five-week winter experience where athletes complete five given workouts. Athletes from all over the world complete these workouts in CrossFit affiliated gyms after the workout is released online every Thursday for the upcoming week. After this stage, the top seventeen world regions send the top athletes from the Open to the Regionals. The Regionals portion of the CrossFit Games is a “live, three-day competition” usually held in May. Athletes out of the seventeen regions then try to qualify either as an individual or with team for the Reebok CrossFit Games. Athletes try their hardest to qualify for the Reebok CrossFit Games because the Games only allow forty individual men, women, and teenagers, along with forty teams and two-hundred masters. Once qualifying for the Reebok CrossFit Games, athletes strive “to distinguish themselves through consistently exceptional performances” so they can prove themselves worthy of the title “Fittest on Earth.” These distinguished acts of strength are scored throughout the games by their placing in each category an athlete participates in. The more an athlete places in an event, the more the chance of being rewarded as the “Fittest on Earth” (“About the Games”).     Drugs are used everyday by people in many different ways for many different reasons. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is used to test hair and urine samples of possible drug abusers or job applicants, and it is the best method for the testing of drug use. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry are two different methods for identifying chemical substances, and the two instruments have be coupled together to perform a highly complementary analytical function. The gas chromatograph and the mass spectrometer have theories behind how their techniques work, and specific forensic applications for their instrumentation. The history and theory of the gas chromatography started over forty years ago with the invention of the capillary column. The gas chromatograph offers rapid and very high-resolution separations of a very wide range of compounds, with the only restriction that the analyzed substance needs to have sufficient volatility. The theory behind the mass spectrometer is to use the difference in mass-to-charge ratio (m/e) of ionized atoms or molecules to separate them from each other. Mass spectrometry is therefore useful for quantitation of atoms or molecules and also for determining chemical and structural information about molecules. Molecules have distinctive fragmentation patterns that provide structural information to identify structural components. The combination of the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer is very easy, because both instrument needs to be modified in excess and both are analyzed in the gas phase and have comparable sample levels and temperature ranges.
