I. Introduction

The revolution of computer technology has played an important role in everyone’s life, even children’s. Now with help from government and parents, not only can they use computers at home but they will probably know how to use them at school as well. Even though there are some good reasons why children should be accustomed to computers at the early age, adults should consider possible negative effects of excessive computer use on children.

A. Helping children study
The first reason why children use computers early is that computers assist children to study. In the past, when they had any problems with study, they would ask adults for help, or go to the library. Now they find it unnecessary to do so. Computers with Internet access can help students in many aspects -

    The Internet is a global computer network, which connects millions of computers through the whole world. The Internet has been mainstream since the mid-90's and has only become more embedded in our lives. Yet, I find we are still discussing how to protect our children at a somewhat basic level. Many children these days use, or at least have, access to the internet. But most people are blinded by all the benefits of the internet, and fail to notice any of the problems that can come from overuse. Although the internet may have many benefits to children, it can also be very harmful to them. One of the most obvious problems with children using the internet is the chance of getting addicted. Internet addiction is a serious thing, but hasn’t drawn much attention due to the fact that it is a newer problem in society. Children that have grown up using computers will naturally be more susceptible to getting hooked on the internet. Many children spend more time on the computer than they spend watching television. Most of the time children spend on the computer can be attributed to the internet. This computer overuse results in less time for children to study, do homework, read, exercise, or participate in any out of their school organizations. Such a pattern will eventually affect the child’s grades, health, and social life.…

    The use of technology has skyrocketed over the past few years, with a whopping ninetyfive percent of people utilizing the internet, constantly checking smartphones, and relying on other forms of media for entertainment, socializing, or work related instances. Compared with the digital satellites, MP3 players, and Palm Pilots of the 1990s, the technology today has truly advanced, causing many people to become dependent on media-related devices. More than fifty percent of today’s youth contribute to this dependency. What is not taken seriously enough is that this eagerness for technology is destroying the minds of young children by distracting them from important family values, causing various bullying issues, exposing them to violence, and inducing many health risks. Technology therefore should cease to exist in the lives of children, who should instead learn important life lessons from playing outside, utilizing talents, or spending time with the family. It is very important for a child to spend quality time with his or her family. Parents, grandparents, siblings, or extended family members help children develop positive self-esteem by communicating values, encouragement, and love. Today, children’s sense of those relationships is altered due to the fact that they are becoming less and less interested in family and instead more and more intrigued with media. The average kid ages eight to eighteen spends over seven and a half hours a day using technology, equaling seventy-five hours a week (Negative Effects Of). With all of that attention going to technology, children develop a loss of family interest. A group of four to six year olds said they would rather watch television than spend quality time with their fathers (Negative Effects Of). Story time with mother is rapidly being replaced with an old episode of Spongebob, thus creating disconnected children that do not find the value they should within their families.
