Helping to Reduce Intergroup Conflict
Conflict usually happens within a group. Even with a group, an Individual will see the world differently and have their own idea of how things should be done. Those different point of views often can often escalate into conflict. Intergroup conflict is simply a disagreement within the group of two or more of its members. How a counselor handles the conflict will determine if it will work towards the group’s advantage or cause even greater conflict. During this discussion, we will provide a brief description of a youth counselor and their role and responsibilities to their group, how they work to resolve conflicts within the group, and youth programs can incorporate that help youth learn to work together and resolve their conflicts in positive manner.
A youth counselor coaches and develops children and teenagers through their personal mental or emotional issues, disabilities, and/or substance abuse. They may need to provide crisis intervention, help youth deal with overwhelming situations they may be going through, and help to resolve conflicts within their group. Another part of a youth counselor’s responsibility is disciplining when necessary. Youth counselors can be found in local schools, hospitals, churches, and detention centers.
Youth counselors in a detention center job responsibilities also include conducting individual and group counseling sessions which help to establish and reinforcement appropriate behaviors in the center. They also help youth adjust to their new environment in relationship to the rules in the center and help them to learn how to take responsibility for their own actions. Youth counselors are taught how to appropriately restrain aggressive youth when needed, participate and support youth involvement in activities such as
