Living abroad can be extremely rewarding as well as completely stressful. My first overseas assignment was while I was stationed in Naples, Italy. I had travelled overseas before this, but nothing prepared me for actually living in Italy. People from the United States can be very service oriented and sometimes have higher expectations of how services should be rendered when doing simple tasks such as going out to eat, shopping or just asking for simple directions when we are lost. After my first few days in Naples this was going to be a massive culture shock! I grew up in the city that doesn’t sleep, New York. Some argue that New Yorker’s are rude and demanding people, while others will say they are the best in the world. People in New York have grown to accept that life is sometimes very frantic and chaotic. That being said customer service is usually more in tune towards customer satisfaction and people have a much higher demand for quality service in the end. When we arrived in Naples my wife was in culture shock more than myself as I will never forget the words that came out of her mouth “This is Europe, it’s more of a third world than Brazil”. I told her to calm down and it would all be fine. We were soon whisked away by our sponsor and driven to our hotel which felt like driving on a race track thru very narrow streets. Where ever there was open space either a car or a moped moved to quickly fill the gap. Then upon arriving at our hotel, the Hotel receptionist was on the phone and she was having a very animated argument. When it was our turn, I asked if everything was ok, the receptionist smiled and said “of course, and told me that in Naples people can be very energetic when speaking with their colleagues”. Shortly after i arrived, I was pretty sure that I was going to hate it because nothing happened nearly as fast as the United States. For example, customer service in restaurants and travelling locally was a difficult task.

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, there is a motif of survival and a central idea that when one is put in a desperate situation, developments that may otherwise seem either mundane or horrifying may instead be seen as remarkable or amazing. When all the guards leave their posts because of an alarm signal, two cauldrons of soup are left unattended. All of the prisoners quickly take note of the soup and are in awe, “two cauldrons of soup with no one to guard them! A royal feast” (Wolff 59). The author’s use of hyperbole in describing the deliciousness and quality of the soup makes the disparity of the prisoners clear. The reader does not consider two cauldrons of soup that has been described as nothing better than “thick” to be a “royal feast”…

There are many types of customers, Management often mistakenly assumes that everything is okay until a customer complains, not realizing that when customers are dissatisfied it is most times easier for them to quietly take their business elsewhere. One of the first instances that I can remember concerning cultural shock, was when I took a Western Caribbean cruise with friends. When it comes to bad customer services experience the one that I described above it is how employees are not well trained in sales, and that’s why they are not willing to share treat customers in the way customers can consider the visit a good experience. Customers that are mistreated usually don’t come back and spread the word of what it feels like to be a customer at the establishment, and maximize the factors contributing to a bad experience.…

Moving overseas can be a huge adventure and an extremely rewarding experience. There is a great deal of anticipation beforehand, as well as a mixture of often conflicting, different emotions about moving, and if you have little ones as well, there is even more to think about. There may be family members and close friends who are sad or upset about the move, while others encourage you to experience new things and admire you for your courage in taking such a big step.…

Being in a new cultural setting can be intimidating at first, but is also very exciting. Living in America gave me an opportunity to develop new strengths, and abilities. Starting a life in a foreign country is very difficult. But I have learned that the key to succeed is adapting. I had to adapt to a new family, new people, new culture, and a new school. The first time I arrived to Framingham, everything was new to me. The first thing I had to change was my way of greeting others. Back in Peru when people greet others, people give a kiss on the cheek.…

As to personal contribution, in fact, I haven’t done a lot of work compared to some team members, but I do have learnt many new things. I had spent nearly one week learning what our project should be at the beginning of our project. And then Sam and Kyle assigned tasks to Cloud and me, such that we two formed the QA team and do testing. Our first task is checking the php file of school module timetable. Firstly, I sampled more than 3000 lines of codes and found nothing abnormal, but my partner cloud found a mistake on the length of classes. Then I wrote a bugging report for this and post it on our website. Finally, it was fixed by our technical team.…
