Hello Cookies,

Welcome to the Martha Cook Building for the fall of 2010. We hope to be able to meet many of you on Move-in Day. Please stop by our ice cream station in the main hall that afternoon and let us serve you. We look forward to helping to make your experience at MCB this year a memorable one.

You may not know that the Martha Cook Building is the only dorm on campus that is supervised by a Board of Governors consisting of five women who were formerly residents of MCB. The Board of Governors was established in 1915 at the request of William Cook. William Cook donated the money to build first, the Martha Cook Building and later the Law Quad next door. All of the governors share a vested interest in seeing the traditions of the building continue while we serve the ever changing needs of the residents in the building as they attend the University of Michigan.

We are pleased to announce that we have approved a project to provide the entire Building with WiFi. This Project will begin very shortly and we are optimistic that it will be completed by Move-In. Another sweet addition to our Dining Services is a soft serve machine in the dining room. We are sure you will share our excitement at this news!

We appreciate your thoughtful comments from the annual survey and we also enjoy our opportunities to visit with you during teas and other events. We look forward to getting to know you as we visit your Martha Cook home this year.

Gaylord was the first offical dormitory that was founded in 1884 (Perry et al. 54). Like other dorm rooms it was heated by steam (wood stoves) and had gas lighting (Perry et al 55 and 56). This shows how food was very scarce in 1800-1900’s. During this time the women had to go to the spring three hundred feet from each building for drinking water, but In Gaylord, cistern water is piped to every floor in ladies’ hall (Perry et al. 55). Water was hard to get as Crete had no water system (Perry et al. 55). Gaylord had many rooms. This dormitory had 42 rooms that housed 75-80 students (Perry et al. 56). This hall was different because the women teachers also reside (Perry et al. 57). I would not like my teachers being my RA in college. Reverend…

Dining halls are a convenient place for students to meet and socialize with each other. Building community is a very important part of LUC’s mission and by improving the dining experience for the students; it builds community and works toward the “student promise” that is so stressed by the University. Megan Beaupre, a junior at LUC, says, “I met my three best friends, who are now my roommates, in the dining hall freshman year. The main thing we bonded over was the gross food and dirty dining halls though.” This is not the reputation that LUC is striving for; increasing good hygiene in the halls will only in turn improve the quality of the food and the atmosphere.…

Even generations ago, my family members realized how difficult it was to fit in time to see distant family members. That’s why since my great grandmother was around, we’ve spent one day during the holiday season participating in what we call The Progressive. As the tradition goes, each family is required to prepare one part of the traditional five course meal, the assignment of which rotates between the families each year. Each family prepares their part of the meal and hosts it at their home, allowing the entire family to visit everyone’s home and “progress” through one giant five course meal throughout the course of the day. It has, without a doubt, provided some of my family’s favorite stories throughout the years while allowing us to reflect on the year’s past with each other. Although it has been around since my grandparents were children, it has changed drastically since it’s inception those many years ago.…
