Increased demand for care of diverse patients and cultural needs of patients with complex health care needs has necessitated increased collaboration among health care professionals, and respect for the contribution of other disciplines to provide patient centered care ((Ward, Schiller, & Goodman, 2014). To address this need, core competencies for IPE were developed by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) committee consisting of six health care disciplines. The purpose of the core competencies were to ensure that health care disciplines include the skills and knowledge of interprofessional education in their school curriculum. Another purpose of the core competencies are to guide educators, faculty and health care providers as they educate students to provide patient-centered care to the public and the community at large. (Interprofessional Education Collaborative Expert Panel, 2011). The six members of the IPEC committee are: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American Dental Medical Association, Association of Schools of Public Health, and the Association of American Medical Colleges.
