Critical Thinking Class Analysis
Early in the beginning of this class I discovered a personal truth. I have no limitations other than those I choose to impose upon myself. I don’t know if you remember a student who sign up for your class but decided to drop out for unknown reasons and yet, she managed to inspire me. Paula I believe was her name, and these were her words, “My brother told me that if you didn’t know what to write about, then just write about anything”. These merely words may have not meant much to anybody else but for me, it was enough to inspire my intellectual to sharpen my writing skills. Everybody brings unique ideas to this class, and every head can be considered an unexplored world full of thoughts just waiting to be imprinted on a piece of paper. …show more content…
This is due to the preparation we must go trough as students and individuals to become better when reasoning about our beliefs and taking actions towards those beliefs. Critical thinking is an important component to define our personality when it comes to expressing our ideas to the world. To become a critical thinker, we must break down our ideas to pieces and try to figure out the reasoning behind them and determine whether they can be considered good or bad ideas. I believe this class emphasizes on doing so by challenging us with essays and free-writes on an every week basis. I want to mention that I believe I have achieved those goals and this is …show more content…

Chapter 1 of Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing: A Brief Guide to Argument by Sylvan Barnet, Hugo Bedau, and John O’Hara states that critical thinking has been misunderstood as negative and should be understood as the act of being able to think skillfully, observationally and consciously. This chapter also discusses that a critical thinker should not act upon opinionated and prejudgment beliefs, but should take consideration, and make themselves knowledgeable by finding factual information before making certain claims. Thus making the critical thinker capable of having sound judgment by being able to analyze the situation at hand intelligently and deliberately. In this chapter, I learned that being a critical thinker, reader and writer requires being capable of finding solutions to ideas, questions, and concerns by becoming aware of circumstances.…

I don't know if there is a universal correct definition of critical thinking. I think this a very individualistic tool used by humans to break down different problems and situations and the best way to go about coming up with the best resolution in a non-biased manner. Gathering a thought process that is reasonable and with demeanor. This is simply how I would personally define critical thinking. Thinking things over more than once, second guessing yourself here and there, seeing things from multiple perspectives, and most importantly thinking if your thoughts would be different from the other side of an argument or situation. I think critical thinking is important for us to fully understand ourselves and our situations as well as others and their situations. Critical thinking is considering multiple angles and viewpoints and trying to understand them and where they come from, as well as why they exist. In my life personally, critical thinking has always been something I would like to think I've had due to being raised in a very diverse atmosphere and a very diverse community. I've seen racism towards more than one race, I've seen both sides of different biases, and I have lived in a small town closed minded community as well as the middle of a large densely populated city. It makes you think differently than most around you. It seems like you feel differently than most around you. There isn't much that surprises you so there aren't many situations that you are uncomfortable in. You think before you act, you think before you speak, and you take time and consideration to realize the type of environment you are in and the people you are surrounded by. Things like this don't go through every young person's mind before acting or speaking. You slow down, you react calmer, and you try not to get too high or too low. From this course I don't think I'm looking for how to think critically as much as why some of…

    * Read? Thinking critically when reading has helped me keep an open mind about what I am reading. I know that when I sit down to read something now that I can’t have a closed mind, I have to look at it from every angle that I can. I have learned that I can ask question and try to find the answer in the answer when I am reading. I feel like I can pick up on some of the feeling that the writer had when they were writing the article, or the book that I am reading. For example with the discussion question for week 8, dealing with Terri Schiavo I got to think outside the box, it was a hard…

Critical thinkers maintain a healthy skepticism. They examine definitions of terms, weigh premises, consider evidence, and decide whether arguments are valid and logical. When making an important decision in your life, it can be extremely helpful in thinking critically about certain situations. For example, sex or sexual intercourse is something all people should take seriously. Sure, when people think about sex, they tend to think more on the positive side of the effects of sex. However, there is much more to take into consideration: are you young? What would happen if you were to get pregnant? Are you in high school?…

Where to start. Taking this class has giving me hope to go out in the world question everything that doesn’t make sense to me. Also, living freely of this entrapment of not knowing how to properly analyze situations. As I expressed in my last journal, the first time you asked me, “What is critical thinking?” I was honestly shocked and quite embarrass not really knowing what it meant. As the year went by it slowly started making sense little by little every time I sat in class and you picked my brain asking the hard questions. At first I thought watching and reading videos after videos and articles upon articles was a waste of time but as I force myself to do all the homework I started to like critical thinking. My favorite quote from Dr. Richard…
