David Lurie Quotes
I strongly and redoubtably agree with the statement made about David Lurie in J.M Coetzee's novel Disgrace. The first impression that I and most readers dig into is that David Lurie is a selfish, and disgusting pig. Once we become more open minded about David and look at other issues surrounding his pigish behaviours, we see that there is a combination of wreckless and humane characteristics, which in turn contradicts the other in the novel, as there is not one point where David Lurie is completely defined as one of the characteristics, but both of them. Therefore David is hard to like at first but there are parts of the novel, where we can be understanding and accepting of David. My essay will explore these disputes and will show the areas …show more content…
David describes Bev as being a, "dumpy bustling little woman," with "no neck," and "wiry hair." David does not like woman who dont make effort to look attractive, but he goes on to condradict himself. They have sex. This affair is also a great betrayal towards Mr Shaw, as he describes his and Davids relationship as friendship. This affair is started on impulse as david sweeps his hand past her lips, but nonetheless it is not dissmissed by either one of them. So wee see that these three example of disgrace towards David are all contradictory, but ofcoarse irresponsible acts of desperation and carelousness.

However, in the court case against David, David is staright forwrd and honest. He does not linger about protecting himself, but he tells the truth and infact in a way protects Melanie. He takes his consequence without debate and refuses to appologise, on hoesty basis, of his appology being meaningless. "Do you regret what you did," "no, i was enriched by the experience." Davids honesty, is very rare, because he is not contemptible, but is telling the raw truth, when he knows that lieing could save his

The poem “David”, written by Earle Birney is a very emotional and allure piece. The major theme that pursues throughout the whole poem is maturity. Which includes the beginning of such, and all the obstacles that must be overcome. The tone is a very cynical one, especially when David asks Bob to push him off the cliff. Birney also uses figurative language and poetic devices to create an element of tension, complexity and emotion.…

Many people want to believe they are the best and if they aren’t they should just give up. Derek Jeter once said “ there may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that.” This quote is known as one of the most inspirational quotes for athletes. Jeter’s quote has been applied to the lives of many athletes, especially Jessica Long, Babe Ruth, and himself. . It has affected those individuals in different ways and taught them different things. Each athlete has had a rough patch or difficulty in their sport(s) but they knew that they had to work at it instead of just giving up. That is what made these three good athletes.…

To begin the novel is based on David, the main character, who has recently lost both parents and is set out on a journey to live with his Uncle, Ebenezer Shaw, who he believes as his father's brother, Ebenezer will be willing and obligated to set David out as a great man. He trusts that through his blood lines that family loyalty will be shown from Ebenezer too . This is challenged before David even meets Ebenezer. As David seeks direction to the House of Shaws the first seeds of concern about his Uncle and the House of Shaws is set. "But after two, or maybe three, had given me the same look and the same answer, I began to take it in my head there was something strange about the Shaws itself". David still continues in search of his uncle's house. Further along his journey he is warned off by a honest looking fellow riding a cart and he said "Its name of my affairs; but ye seem a decent-spoken lad; and if ye'll take a word from me, ye'll keep clear of the Shaws" (Stevenson 7). Though David is being warned he still feels obligated to continue. Finally he meets a lady who openly shows her hatred towards Ebenezer and the House of Shaws, "I spit upon the ground, and crack my thumb at it! Black be its fall! If you see the laird tell him what ye hear; tell him this makes the twelve hunner and nineteen time that Jennet Clouston has called down…

    Disgrace

David Lurie in the novel “Disgrace” by J.M. Coetzee is a professor at the University in Cape Town, which is part of the South Africa. He had divorced twice already and now living alone. All of the sudden, he lost almost everything in his life after revealing that in public and school committee that how he almost forced one of his students in his romantic literature at the University to have sex. He lost everything that he had or thought he had, such as, his job, his relaxing life, he 's proud of being artistic success, and even his power of protection of his own daughter. He was too proud to accept his mistake and he didn’t even apologized to the committee of his misbehave when the committee asked him to save himself from disgrace by admitting to his mistake and apologize properly to the student’s family and to the public. Instead, he said; “very well. I took advantage of my position vis-a-vis Ms Isaac. It was wrong, and I regret it. Is that good enough for you?” (80). In the novel “Disgrace”, Coetzee has developed a very interesting issue in our society that people with either money or power are making a big mistake and they don’t apologize even after they get busted unless they have no choice. By the end of the novel, I strongly believe that the main character “David Lurie” in the novel accept his immoral life and recognized that he has no power in his life and he lost all his abilities because of his own behavior. I got convinced that he has changed because he finally could understand his mistakes and consequences of his mistakes. Many events happened during his new chapter of life that he finally recognized what is happening to him and what he had to do to stop the all disasters happen to him and his daughter. He tried his best in several occasions to show it and prove it that he has changed.…
