Serena and Pemberton In the novel Serena by Ron Rash, Serena is a very evil character that will do anything to get what she wants. She is driven by selfish ambition. Her husband Pemberton on the other hand is driven by his deep love for Serena. His all consuming love for Serena gives him the capability of committing very vile actions. Serena is a character of pure evil. She will do anything she can do to get what she wants. Serena does not care who or what was in her way because she will remove it. This all starts when she gets Pemberton to kill Abe Harmon simply because he was being an inconvenience to them. She is a very selfish person who does everything solely for herself. The beginning of this is when he gave the photographer a five-dollar bill so that he could have a copy of the photograph taken of Jacob. Pemberton is very disturbed by the death of Jacob Ballard. When Serena speaks of killing Campbell because he knew too much, Pemberton tries telling her that Campbell will keep his mouth shut. He is realizing that not everything needs to be settled by killing. After Serena and Galloway murder Widow Jenkins, Pemberton concludes that Rachel and the baby are no longer safe. He gives the sheriff three hundred dollars to keep Rachel safe. Serena is the ultimate down-fall of Pemberton. He now knows that Serena will do anything to get what she wants and she is nothing but relentless. Even though Pemberton knows the ugly truth about who Serena truly is, he refuses to face it. He does not believe that the woman he loves is so murderous. To compensate for this nasty truth, Pemberton begins drinking much more then he once did. Serena notices this and concludes that Pemberton is weak and no longer fitting to partake in her little game. She encourages him to keep drinking more and more. She makes sure that Pemberton is hung-over and convinces him to go hunting with Galloway. Once she ensures that he has a hangover and agrees to go hunting for the mountain lion, she gives Galloway specific instructions to kill Pemberton. Not only does Serena poison Pemberton’s food but she also makes sure there are snakes on top of the cliff that Galloway tells him is a good spot to shoot the panther. Pemberton is bit by the snakes and falls off the cliff. The panther comes and finishes him off. Pemberton’s downfall was his consuming love for
