Dead Poets Society Leadership
For The Good of The People
Andrew DuBrin describes socialized charismatic leadership as a leader who restrains the use of power in order to benefit others. He also recognizes that there is another type of leader known as the personalized charismatic. Personalized leaders are those who use their abilities for their own personal gain. In the Dead Poets Society we see many different kinds of leadership. We see Transformational leadership as well, which is a focus of what that leadership accomplishes. Every leader has a goal, every leader has a vision and it's what they do with these goals and visions that determine what kind of leader they are.

Charismatic leaders have a vision, but transformational leaders have a goal, and Professor Keating definitely had many goals. He had goals of changing the way the boys thought, were taught, and perhaps the way that they looked at themselves. Once could say that without John Keating's leadership, Neil never would've gone through with the play which was such a personal success for him. John Keating knew that he had the ability to make a profound difference in these boys. He did not use these powers to teach discipline, or honor or anything that they had already been taught in the past. He used these powers to teach them that in life, you have to make your own decisions, use your own judgment, and use you own passion in order to have a meaningful life. These boys have been trained all of their lives to be like studying robots and it takes true charisma and a good leader to undo these thoughts of belonging. Not all of the leaders in this movie were the elders, however. It doesn't take someone in a higher position to have an impact on your life. The boys, themselves, in this film show tremendous amounts of transformational as well as charismatic leadership through their time together. While some attempts at leadership fail, such as Nuwanda's article, it still showed charisma and made a large transformation in the attitude of everyone at the school. We see a leader in Neil all throughout the movie, pushing to experiment with the dead poets society and to not be lead by those above

The definition of a leader can be expressed in many ways. In reference to the movie 12 Angry Men, I have come to agree with the quote of our sixth President John Quincy Adams which states “if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” (Smith, 14) In this movie the main character Davis played by Henry Fonda was able to influence 11 other jurors by introducing the concept of possibility. Davis exemplified leadership through his behavior, thinking, and communication skills in his efforts to persuade the other jurors.…

The role of a leader is challenging task to take on, especially when you're a young boy. As proven in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, in order to be an effective leader, you have to have no moral character. Being a leader without moral character leads to more effective ruling, because your followers will obey you more than a ruler with moral character, who tends to be more lenient with their style of ruling. The challenge was taken by originally taken on by Ralph, who with moral character, tried to keep the island in order, and Jack, who without moral character, ruled more efficiently and had more people listen to his orders. Being a leader without moral character, such as Jack, is more effective than being a leader with moral…

They have taught me a lot about leadership, one being that it there is not a definition. I even googled it and there wasn’t one. Another being leadership is what you make of it, from what I think will be different to what the next guy thinks, so I can understand why it raises so many controversies and discussions. I can understand why it proved virtually impossible to identify the particular traits that separate leaders from non-leaders. I believe that leadership is based on many things, personality being the main one. Many people would think you have to be at the top of the hierarchy to be branded a leader, for instance they would think of a manager of a leader. But a leader can be anyone, some people just possess a trait that makes them a natural born leader, for example a footballer that steps on the pitch and instantly tells everyone what to do, they all listen to him without question. Even though he may not be captain, he is the…

In this world, there are variety of ways for everyone to experience “leadership.” For instance, an explorer that uses his/her tools to create paths for others to follow can surely be considered as being a “leader,” or shows “leadership.” Furthermore, students who creates clubs and teaches other students with the same interest may also be considered as showing “leadership.” However, there are not only people that show strong leadership, but there are also people that show weak leadership. George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm, uses characters of the book to show poor and excellent leadership, and sends readers a significant message: when proper leadership is not portrayed from the leader, that leader cannot stay in that position any longer.…

(Kinicki-Kreitner p.346) Being a leader in today environment is even challenging than ever. This is due to the pressure for increased transparency due to corporate greed, government pressure and individual corruption. There are great leaders throughout our history such as Martin Luther King, George Washington, and Jack Welsh. However, great leaders don’t have to be good. Barbara Kellerman notes that “leaders are like the rest of us are: trustworthy and deceitful, cowardly and brave, greedy and generous”. (Kinicki-Kreitner p.346) Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin are examples of great leaders that use their influence for their own personal gain. Kinicki-Kreitner states that “to assume that all leaders are good is to be willfully blind (p.346). There are many different leadership styles and different leadership theories that individuals and corporations use. My personal leadership style is based on the Situational Theory. It is also transactional and adaptive compassionate and open.…

According to them successful leaders are ‘naturally born’ and those they have certain native characteristics which distinguish them from non-leaders (see Stodgill, 1948). However, there was significant difficulty in validating these characteristics led to widespread criticism of this trait approach, signaling the emergence of ‘style’ and ‘behavioral’ approaches to leadership (Stodgill, 1948). Style and behavioral theorists shifted the emphasis away from the characteristics of the leader to the behavior and style the leader adopted.…
