The book “Deaf Again” is unique because the author has been on both sides of the spectrum. He had been hearing for some time and now is Deaf. He shows each viewpoint and doesn’t make it just for hearing or just for the Deaf. This author is also unique in showing his feelings for both hearing and also being Deaf.…
Erastus “Deaf” Smith was born on April 19, 1787. The reason they called Erastus, “Deaf” Smith was because he was deaf. He was not a muscular man he was more punny, weak, and skinny. His lungs were also very weak. Deaf called his cows mules, they were “Hornless cows”. Deaf moved to texas, and with him he brought his “hornless cows”. Deaf had a dog named rattler, he used that dog so that nobody would sneak up on him. He was an opened air man so he spent most of his time outside. So he could find animals to kill very easily. That was one of the reasons why texas made him stronger and healthier.…

When you hear someone is expecting a child, the first thing you think of is a perfectly healthy child, ten fingers, ten toes. We don’t think about the negatives, you know, blindness, handicapped, or even deafness. In 2002, Thomas and James Spradley with an epilogue by Lynn Spradley released a novel titled, Deaf Like Me. Parents, Tom and Louise, had a child, Bruce, and were expecting their second. In the summer of 1964, it was discovered Bruce had been diagnosed with German Measles, also known as, Rubella.…
There is an array of reasons that Gallaudet is paramount, to the Deaf and hearing community. The country's first school dedicated to advancing the education for Americans with hearing loss. Gallaudet has paved the way for other Deaf schools and colleges. The great progression of other Deaf schools would not be what they are without the University to shadow after. Life does not have to be complex to be good, this is simply because a good life is, a life where a person is a “good person.” This has always been my perception, however lately, pondering this idea has left me with the question “What is a good person?” There is such a vast diversity of what a good person is, does that now make it complex to have a good life?…
On Thursday, September 17, I went to Hillcrest Elementary/Visual Performing and Arts School to observe Mrs. Mary Jackson’s music class. When I got there the students were sitting in their chair and learning about the music notes AGF. I saw two Special Education Teachers in the class and they told me that they were here to help the exceptional students. These notes are short notes and high pitch notes. After the lecture, Mrs. Jackson had the student watch and learn the song “Fiddle Eye Fee” in which it had animal puppets singing. Every time the chicken puppet came on, it would sing “Fiddle Eye Fee” and the teacher would sing along and play the xylophone. After the demonstration, the teacher had each row of students play the xylophone. As the…
Furthermore some clients might be verbally impaired so in order to facilitate these clients I would provide them with pen and pencil and paper to communicate their needs. Also for clients that are visual impaired I would buy braille paper and print the menu in it so the client communicate what they want to eat.…

If someone is different in our society stares are usual as well as not knowing how to treat a person who is so called “different”. The waiter didn’t want to come off rude and you could tell that she never had a table of people this large who ordered there food and drinks from not talking and were using sign language. This was very interesting to watch and see how she interacted and reacted to being in this type of situation. She was pretty nervous, but made sure to ask if what she was doing or saying was rude in the Deaf culture. She also caught onto a few signs and made comments like “this is awesome” or “I like a challenge”. She was optimistic in helping us and being our server, which I think that she did a great job at treating us as proper…

The first event that I attended was a Starbucks Coffee Night in Pasadena. It was on April first on a Saturday. I arrived at 7:30pm and left at 8pm. There were a lot of people that attended but not all of them were there for the event I believe that there were around twenty five people that attended the event. Overall the event was as described a coffee night, many of the people had been there before and would get in groups. Some would sit down but others would chat while standing up. I thought that there would be a difference in regards to the level of personal space compared to people of hearing. To a certain degree there was but not all that different, what I found more interesting was how some of the people preferred to stand. I was really…
The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…
