1-6. Define human resource management. What HRM functions must be performed regardless of the organization’s size?
“Management is meant for getting things done through others”. To manage or utilize people in an organization in order to achieve their objectives is termed as Human Resource Management.
Every type of organization whether it be small or large are very conscious about their costs and productivity in this global competition and these issues needs major attention from top level management. In order to achieve the objectives of the organization, Human Resource Management consists of a number of functions. Which includes: human resource development, staffing, safety and health, compensation, labor and employee relations.

Human Capital – refers to sets of collective skills, knowledge, and ability that employees can apply to create value for their employers.
1-15. Define profession. Do you believe that the field of HRM is a profession? Explain your answer.
Profession is a vocation characterized by the existence of a common body of knowledge and a procedure for certifying members. It is self-regulated by nature as its members establish their own set of rules, regulations and performance standards instead of taking help of outsiders. Most professions have their own effective representative organizations which helps the members in exchanging their facts and ideas for mutual interest.
Yes, I believe that human resource management is a profession. All the features of profession earlier discussed are applicable to the human resource management as well. The field of Human Resource Management also has such representative organizations that allow the members to exchange their ideas, suggestions and recommendations among the society. Such effective representative organizations may include the following. Society for Human Resource Management
