Demeter And Hades Research Paper
The story of Demeter and Hades takes place in the Greek Deities and the underworld when “Hades, god of the underworld,” fell in love with Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter (Infoplease). Persephone was an innocent maiden that was abducted by her uncle Hades one day as she was collecting flowers. The reason Hades took her was because he was dazzled by her beauty, elegance, and charm so he abducted Persephone and disappeared into the depths of the underworld, the land of the dead, while Persephone's screams went unheard. Then Demeter came to get her daughter, but could not find a trace of Persephone and became distraught and desperate; Demeter searched for her daughter, yet couldn't find a trace of her beloved Persephone. As a result, “Demeter destroyed lands, crops, and livestock” due to the loss of her only child Persephone (Infoplease). Demeter also threatened to make the earth barren forever well as destroy all of humankind if she did not find …show more content…

Hades is the god of the underworld, as well as the kingdom of the dead (in Greek mythology). Although the name Hades equitably belongs to the god himself, it's also used to betoken the underworld as well. Hades, also known as Pluto, ruled a kingdom known as the land of Hades or house of Hades. Cronus and Rhea, two Titans who once ruled the universe, were Hades' parents. The goddesses Hera, Hestia, and Demeter and the gods Zeus and Poseidon were Hades' siblings. Hades' father, Cronus, swallowed him…

The movie leaves out a few important characters that were told in Perseus’s original myth. Originally, Perseus set out on his quest for Medusa’s head in order to save his mother Danae from King Polydectes. In the movie however, they replace the importance of his mother with his lover Io, who he must save from the sea monster, the Kraken. Film makers know the importance of a love story in today’s movies, which is probably why they make this change. Also, the movie is given an obvious villain, which is where Hades is brought into it. With him being the easily identifiable evil character, that leaves no room for confusion. Perseus’s character is only given minor changes from the original myth to the movie, still portraying him as a brave and compassionate…

One part of the myth is how Demeter reacts to losing Persephone. In the three versions, Demeter’s reaction is fairly similar. Obviously she is enraged and wants her daughter back, so she stopped the earth’s ability to produce grain or seed. In one version, Laura Strong states that Demeter is consumed by depression and essentially forgets about her worldly duties. This could symbolize the relationship between a mother and her child in the way that a mother will postpone her duties as a person (or goddess) to care for her child. As for the original…

In Hymn to Demeter, Persephone is taken by Hades who is the God of the underworld. In the hymn, it says, “He seized her against her will and on his golden chariot carried her off wailing.”(Hymn to Demeter 23) Persephone was in a meadow, picking flowers when she was caught off guard and snatched away in a blink of an eye. The reason why she was taken was not her fault at all but it was because Zeus, that she was taken away. Helios, who is the God of the sun, was approached by Demeter to ask him of her daughter’s disappearance and he told her, “No one else… is responsible except cloud-gathering Zeus, who gave her to Hades, his own brother, to be called his youthful wife. He seized her and with his horses led her wailing loudly down the misty…

As you are an “Employee of Hades,” and a god of death, I have several questions for you. I know you are a very busy god, and I thank you for taking time out of your job to read and respond. I mean, people pass away all day, every day, so I will try to be brief. Firstly, there is a large amount of rumours about your appearance. Is it true that you have large wings? On many pictures and vases, you are portrayed as a ancient warrior with a helmet and beard, along with the wings mentioned before. Is that the truth ? If you have been depicted falsely, what is your true appearance, and why do authors and artists alike depict you in other ways?…

So, after this Hades let Persephone leave but he gave her a pomegranate. When she ate the pomegranate seeds, she was bound to him for one third of the year, either the dry Mediterranean summer, when plant life is threatened by drought, or the autumn and winter. “When Persephone returned, Demeter was happy and cheerful, and she paid attention to the crops. It is then summer (or summer and half of spring and fall), and plants thrive. When Persephone, however, returns to the Underworld for four (or six) months each year, Demeter ignores all the crops, doing nothing but mourning Persephone's kidnapping. It is now winter (or winter and the other half of spring and fall). That's what caused the seasons in Greek mythology.” Demeter also has a curse called the “suffering gods.” Because every winter and autumn her daughter, Persephone was taken to the underworld (Queen of the underworld, and Goddess of spring growth). So Demeter would be so depressed and upset that all the crops, seasons halted and living all stopped growing and died. All aside from the said stories Demeter had done many great things It was believed that she made the crops every year. “thus the first loaf of bread made from the…
