The ancient Greeks were the first people to practice democracy in a community as a city. 2 There were two types of democracy: direct democracy and representative democracy. Direct democracy was practiced in small towns so that it was possible for all members of the community to come together and vote on laws and to discuss problems within the community. Representative democracy was practiced in countries and made it impossible for all members of the community to meet together and vote on laws and discuss problems. Citizens elected a representative to travel and meet with other representatives to vote on laws on the behalf of the citizens they represent. Historically, in America, democracy has been continuously supported. One example of this hope is the pursuit of the American Dream. Historically, the American Dream has meant different things to different people. To immigrants entering the United States, it generally means an opportunity to build a better life for themselves and their families. Typically, to those that have been born and raised in America, it is the classic white picket-fenced house with a perfect nuclear family, as seen in vintage television shows. However, today’s version of the American Dream has changed to become more career-oriented. In essence, the American Dream continues to evolve, as well as individuals’ rights to obtain it. Laws have been established to make sure all people have the right to pursue and obtain their version of the American Dream.4
