Dentistry Application Essay

When my father was diagnosed with cancer last year, I learned that strength can be found in disheartening circumstances. Rather than spending Thanksgiving traditionally, my family gathered in his hospital room after a major surgery. While everyone but my father indulged with turkey and mashed potatoes, he remained his humorous self while eating a simple dinner of Jell-O. Motivated by his optimism and perseverance, I decided to continue the challenge of pursuing a career in dentistry despite an unsuccessful previous application cycle.
Since the last cycle, I enhanced my academic portfolio at a post-baccalaureate program at California State University, East Bay. Prioritizing obligations, attending office hours, and forming study groups, I excelled
For a community outreach event, I inspired teamwork by rallying club members to contact local dentists for donations, and we were able to gather 500 toothbrushes and toothpastes for those in need. During this experience, a specific team leader confided in me about his struggle to care for an ill family member while balancing academics and club involvement. It was a reminder that those who are optimistic may have hardships that elude the unwary. As president, it was important to learn not only from patients I encountered during internships, but also from those with whom I worked alongside. I plan to maintain this level of sympathetic leadership as a dental student through organizations such as California Dental Association and American Student Dental
Reminded by my father and peers, I know that perseverance is key to achieving my goals and dreams. I am now a stronger and more mature applicant capable of excelling in and contributing to my future dental school after having grown through personal hardships. Dentistry is the optimal career to utilize lessons learned this past year, and I am prepared for the challenges in dental school.
