Derf Backderf Essay

Derf Backderf the author of My Friend Dahmer and many other books is an award-winning political cartoonist and comix creator. Derf Backderf is actually his fictitious name but in real life his name is John Backderf. He grew up in Richfield, Ohio and went to two schools which were Eastview Junior High and Revere High School where Jeffrey Dahmer was in his class. After graduating high school Backderf decided to go to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh but transferred and graduated college from ohio state university instead. He has now ended up winning over fifty awards for his newspaper work and has his work displayed in many places all over the world. I think the author was pretty qualified to write this book because of his advantage point of going to school with Dahmer sense seventh grade and basically being teenage friends with him throughout his high school life. In school Dahmer acted really weird yelling random sounds and twitching all the time and Derf and his friends would kinda make fun of him. People like Derf and his friends invited him to do stuff with them like go fishing or go to the mall but they always new something was not right about him. Dahmer started to really get into alcohol to stop all of the bad voices in his head. He would have alcohol with him everywhere he went even in school. But it only stopped the voices for a little bit and he was soon back to killing animals in harsh ways. In school they had a Dahmer fan club and Derf was in it. They would draw comics about Dahmer and have him do funny stuff for them. Pretty soon Jeffrey Dahmer’s parents split up and he graduated school.
