My First Flight

The seasons are approaching in which families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. This time of year does not carry the same feelings for me as they did when I was young. I am a military spouse and my husband has been away for most of our holidays. One peculiar Christmas I received the opportunity to spend the holiday with him this was my first flight experience.
The morning of my flight, I got up at 2 o’clock, said a prayer, and kissed the children. My mother-in-law drove me to the airport. I was very nervous and excited. I went to the kiosk to get my tickets and check my luggage. I made my way to security, once there I had to take off my shoes and jacket. I placed my carry-on on the conveyer and walked through the security scanner, I was alarmed because of the loud buzzing sound. The security lady pulled me to the side and began to scan me with a wand. I was nervous and embarrassed. She asked me if I had and knifes or weapons on my body I gave her a deranged look and replied no. She asked me if I had any sharp objects on my person, again I replied no. I started sweating because I was very nervous and wanting to go back home. I did not know why the body scanner and wand was beeping and buzzing because I did not have any metal in my possession. The security lady asked me did I have metal in my bra, I turned and looked at her with a surprising look and replied yes. We both laughed I explained to her this is my first airplane ride and I was nervous and afraid. She tried to help calm my nerves by telling me funny stories.
I walked down to the boarding site and the two luggage men playfully said to me and two others that were walking to the plane, “Sorry but you just missed it.” I instantly felt tears in my eyes then they just started laughing and shook their heads saying go on before it does leave! I ran to my seat, which was 10A, a window seat all to me. I was on a plane; something I

For most of the 100 or so sleepy-eyed people boarding the U.S. Airways shuttle to Boston from New York on a recent hazy Saturday morning, the 35-minute flight could not have been a bigger non-event. But that was not the case for about 20 passengers clustered nervously near the gate. Many clutched puzzle books and bags of sour candy as though they held talismans. Some made nervous jokes, others sobbed quietly. “I have pills with me just in case of an emergency,” said a teenage girl who planned to distract herself on the flight with celebrity magazines. Mariasol Flouty, a 44-year-old software developer from White Plains, held fast to her Sudoku book. “I had plane-crash nightmares,” she confessed. “I woke up very tense.” No one was more terrified than Beth Brenner, a 45-year-old mother of two teenagers from Somers, N.Y. “I was hysterical last night,” she said, “but my son said, ‘You’re going to be O.K.’ ” Ms. Brenner was crying quietly on the…

Because I was at the back, I couldn't tell what was going on in the first class section. Three people with red bandannas entered the cockpit. The had left one person outside of the cockpit who was holding something in his hand. After a minute or so, they came back out of the cockpit dragging two bodies behind them. They went back in the cockpit and within a minute we were told from the new pilot that they had a bomb on board. They allowed us to make phone calls. I was the first one to be able to make a call. My parents didn't pick up the phone, so I left a message telling them that my plane had been hijacked. After I left a message, I sat down in my seat and let others…

I was highly nervous on my first trial attempt to skip through the aisle and was concerned if I would possibly make a mistake doing this. I came to a conclusion to skip through the drinks aisle because it was the most clustered and would have received the most reactions from people. I skipped through the aisle rather slowly because I didn’t know how to pace myself to where I could interpret their reactions quick enough. There were approximately 8 people in the aisle and had to make sure I wouldn’t laugh or make an unnecessary mistake. Also in the aisle, were two little kids that saw me skip through the aisle while laughing really hard and eventually asked their parents if they could skip around through the store. I also got hysterical feedback from an elder couple as they approached me and first questioned why I was skipping through the aisle. I told them I was given a promotion from my manager at Blockbuster, so I was excited but also happy. Another person in the aisle was extremely rude and called me an inappropriate name and seemed to find my act unacceptable and childish. When breaking this…

On June 12, 2006, I was ready to board my flight at San Diego International airport, when I was given a once in a lifetime experience. As I began to board, the captain and first officer were greeting the passengers ahead of me. The line was moving very slowly; however, I eventually made it to the front. The captain and I began talking when all of a sudden he asked a very typical question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” I responded, “I want to be a pilot” and for no apparent reason offered to take me into the cockpit. Inside the cockpit, the captain continued to talk about the plane while pointing to instruments such as altimeter and vertical speed indicator, when I suddenly asked him, “How did he become a pilot?” He responded by saying,…

When I was young I always dreamed of flying on a plane. Finally, my dream was coming true, and I was on my way to the USA where I had always known I would end up. This was my first trip on an airplane, and it was also one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I remember everything about my first flight, and it was a lot to remember since it took twenty-seven hours from start to finish. The fight did have one stop in Japan, but that was just to change planes. Once my parents and I got onto the plane and sat down, I started to look at everything around me. I noticed the small white air vents right above my head with little lights next to the vent. It was so great because the controls were right on my armrest. There was a place on the armrest to plug the headphones in in order to listen to music or watch a movie. After everyone got settled into their seats, the airhostess came over the intercom and explained all of the safety procedures. But I am going to tell you; I couldn’t understand what they say, besides staring at their body language. They also showed everyone how to put the seat belts on correctly. After the airhostess was done with…

On the plane, I found our seats and sat down and buckled our seat belts. I had never been on a plane before. When I realized that in a few moment we were going to be on the air, I was nervous. But I had to look calm, for my daughter, and for everyone else. The pilot introduced himself and said that the flight from Santo Domingo to New York was going to take 4 hours.…

I closed my eyes hoping I would bring myself to imagine I was in heaven safe and happy without any sort of pain I've been feeling since I began the trip but sadly that imagine didn't last, I heard somebody yell “Put your hands up now!!!” I froze in spot not knowing what to do the only thing I did know was my life was about to come to an end. I heard the Immigration and Customs Enforcement known as a police to arrest immigrants. The police officer was actually arresting and yelling at a man I knew who was also on the journey with the rest. I thanked God for not letting the police officer find me. As bad as I felt for the man I had to keep my head and keep walking. As I remembered my mother's words “Never bend your head. Always hold it high.…

That morning, I had to wake up at 4:45 AM because our flight was a seven in Ft. Lauderdale. At the airport, I saw a bunch of my friends, and we were jeering at me because I was really hyper. When we got on the plane, all of our jaws dropped in shock. The plane was HUGE! When we got on, I thought it was going to be mediocre, and boring, but boy I was I wrong. In fact, that was the only worry that I had, so when I got on, my friends were tantalizing me because I was so worried. While I was on the plane, I noticed one of my friends sitting next to me was trying to be unflinching, and trying to be strong because she hates planes. I tried to explain to her that traveling by air abridge the time need to get to far-distant places. After awhile I became a little irate, but I told her to be intrepid because planes are the safest form of transpiration there is. I was surprised that they didn't adjourn her from the plane!…

We boarded the flight which was a small plane, and waited to take off. The crew began by counting people on the plane with a pen and paper. After about ten mins we noticed a few cabin members go to the back of the plane, since we were at the top of the plane we could not see what was happening. There was no announcement made by the captain or any other member of the airline as to why we where delayed. After an hour of waiting an ambulance member walked on to the plane and escorted a woman off the plane. It was then I heard from a passenger what had happened. The woman had an ear plug stuck in her ear and wasn’t able to remove it. The woman returned after fifteen minutes , and it was only then we heard from the captain over the intercom, that we had misses our time slot because of the delay and we had to wait a further twenty minutes to be cleared to take off. When we did eventually take off the remaining of the flight was fine.…

Graduation dance ended, that weekend I was off to Cancun, Mexico for ten days. The trip was paid in advance and I wasn’t going to spend a cent once I was over there. Everything was included such as hotel transportation, food, drink, cover to the clubs, and boat rides. Forty-eight students were going to attend the trip. The class was separated in half , so that the first half would leave in the morning and second half in the afternoon. The plane would leave from Juarez, Chihuahua to Mexico City, Then from Mexico City to Cancun, Mexico. Arriving at Juarez airport I had to do a lot of paper work since I am American and I’m leaving to another country. As I heard the speaker in the airport , that the airplane was now aboarding section “A” I got up with my backpack same as all of my classmates, and we started running like little kids down the tunnel and towards the plane.…

When we landed in London, during the 3 hour transit, my parents decided that we should just hang around in the Duty Free area until the announcements were made to board the plane. Whilst my parents fell asleep on the seats in the transit lounge I wanted to explore the Heathrow airport. So I made sure where my parents were and did a little trip around the airport looking at the other passengers and stores around me. There were a lot of eating outlets such as Starbucks, Mc Donald’s, etc. While looking around, I saw in the corner of my eye a big glass window that had the view of the planes taking off and landing. I was so interested in watching those planes and almost forgot about my parents that were resting on the other side of the terminal. I went back to my parents and wanted them to come with me to the area where we can see planes landing and taking off. We spent so much time watching these interesting movements…

We took a short flight to New York from San Diego and then connected to Manila. Sayuri and I flew on a first class. As the aircraft being taxied to NA’s runway, we heard a familiar voice on the PA, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome on board to the Philippine Airlines flight PR-143 to Manila. This is Capt. Gerardo Figueroa Jr. …” I wondered if the pilot was our classmate, then someone tapped me and said, “Sir, we’re about to take off. Please fasten your seatbelt.” I was surprised because the flight attendant who tapped me was a familiar face. And I was right. She was Erika Anne Calayag who was now working as a Flight Attendant. I have also confirmed from her that our…

My parents and I were preparing to go to the airport by a car. The car was going ahead with my excitement. When I reached the airport, I saw all of my cousins were waiting outside to say goodbye to me. I entered the secure room after saying goodbye to all. I thought it would be a memorable scene when I entered the airplane using the stairs, but nothing happened like that. I entered the airplane using a path as if I transferred from one room to another. When I sat on my chair, I was surprised to see a TV screen in front of me. I tried a lot to start the TV using the buttons and at last I succeed. I was sorry that my seat was in the middle of the airplane so I could see nothing outside. After a few moments, somebody announced to fasten seatbelts and to switch off all electronics like mobiles, laptops etc. Then I felt that the airplane was running, but it was so slow that I thought I would not be able to reach America within a month. Suddenly the airplane went too fast and took off into the sky. I was very scared and I felt I could fall down anytime. There was a couple sitting beside me and they looked at me with surprise.…

It was a sunny day, the 777 Boeing plane was on the way from Hongkong to SanFrancisco. Everything was good and I was very enjoyable. I was sleeping and assured that this trip would be ok, nothing would happened. At about 9 o’clock in the morning , our plane had arrived in the territory of United State in California’s State. The captain of the plane made an announcement and wanted all passengers to wake up and tighted their seatbelt. I was very excited because 10 more minutes I would stand on the land of USA. So I looked through out the window. Strangely, I saw a little smoke from the left engine, I wondered if that smoke didn’t come from the engine and from something else, but when I look closely it was clearly come from the engine and there was fire in it. Therefore, I immediately loosen my safety belt and told the flight attendant, so she came with me and looked through out the window, seeing the smoke so she rushed fastly through the captain room. After 2 minutes, the captain informed passenger about the failure of the left engine and wanted everyone not to lose their self-control. Cry and scream was on the plane so loudly so I couldn’t hear any attention clearly. What in my mind at that moment was: “We all gonna die”…
