Descriptive Essay About Canoeing
Reaching the 10 mile mark to get back to the original camping site got everyone happy but the happiness soon died as the dark clouds caved our heads and tiny little droplets fell down like bullets. The strong wind howled through the river and the thunder roared. Trees on the side started dancing and leaves clapped their hands. My canoe started rocking harder and harder from side to side allowing the big waves to come into my canoe. Three canoes was already ahead of us and another just went past us. The strong currents taking us to wherever it want us to be. At first, I thought it would stop soon but the storm seem to be more. As every second ticked by, the cloud above us grew darker and the wind blew faster, my body feel like giving up and the confidence I had is lower than before. …show more content…
The rock was faded green and grey. At the time when our canoe hit the rock the canoe had turned around going against the current. Turning my head around only to see the canoes that was once beside us way ahead getting smaller. Getting back to my group is all that I wanted at the moment. Paddling again did not take us anywhere. Day sat in front of the canoe all drenched wet and with the most grumpiest look on her. She had her paddle on the side with her hands covering her hair while trying to reach for her poncho. “ The is not the place to die.”, I thought. If we were to just paddle just a little more than we’ll be free. I started paddling again and Day still didn’t move an inch. I yelled at Day with tears in my eyes,“YOU BETTER START PADDLING! I DON’T WANT TO DIE HERE!” Which turn out more of a whin than a command but still manage to make sure she can hear me over the heavy rain and crazy

She dreamed that she was running from the river, but the water kept catching up to her and pulling her under. It was so real that she could feel the water burning her nostrils and filling her ears and lungs. As she fought against the rising water, a giant eagle suddenly scooped her up out of the water. In its talons, she hung as limp as a rag doll. The tree tops, brushed against her body, tearing at her flesh and her clothes as he flew- Suddenly, he dove downward and she thought that he might land, but then he flew upward, higher and higher into the sky he went, carrying her along with…

The splashes of the freezing spillway mixed with the cold wind coming off the water sent chills down my back. I yawned, the loud purr of the tugboat next to us made it impossible to hear my uncle ask if I was tired. We were passing the train of barges right after we left the launch and were headed into the woods. I have done all this before. It was all familiar to me. The only difference was that I had never been out here this early. The eerie white light of the moon was the only thing that let us see right now. Luckily for us the moon was huge and full tonight. It was about 4:30 in the morning and we were speeding into the swamps of the spillway. I looked at my uncle and I saw him standing up, driving the boat, with a smile on his face. This was his job and he loved it. When you love the wilderness, being out in the woods for eight hours a day was a treat. Especially when it ended with picking up a paycheck of about a thousand dollars at the end of each of those days.…

We were ready. Paddles in hand, canoe by our side, personal floatation devices, knee pads, and cameras. The afternoon sun shined on the lake, reflecting it across the calm waters. Crowds of people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon on North Beach at Devil’s Lake State Park. Young children stumbled on the moist sand and shallow waters as they tried to catch tadpoles with their small buckets. Soothing, a gentle breeze passed by as we walked towards the edge of Devil’s Lake. Marveling at the majestic mountain of cedars around the lake and smelling the damp sand, my dad, little sister, and I were all set to take on our first wilderness inquiry; canoeing across a lake. It was safe to say that we were in for an exciting adventure…

I didn’t think we’d ever get this raft finished, Charles thought. He sat on it cross-legged and stared down into the water of the pond. His friend, Pete, stood on the bank and watched him. It was calm and blue as the sky. “So,” Pete shouted, “Are you ever coming back” “No,” Charles called. “I’m staying here all night.” Pete laughed. he always laughed. “All night.” He had had his turn already, so it was mine now, Charles thought. He was in no hurry. They had worked on this raft for all summer and it was good to have it done, although it wasn’t really done, since it was kind of tipping to one side. Pete started throwing rocks near Charles. Charles knew he wasn’t trying to hit him but just to play around so he ignored him. Charles had learned…

There are over two thousand drug courts in America, each one specializing in its own level of drug abuse. A drug court’s primary role is to handle cases with offenders of substance abuse. They offer offenders an opportunity to enter a rehabilitation program in lieu of sentenced jail time. The road to recovery is of course challenging and difficult, making the drug courts so strict and costly. Drug courts were generally created for non-violent drug abusers. Although these offenders are given the chance to avoid jail time they are extremely supervised by the court officials. Drug tests, substance abuse treatment, must make regular appearances in court and constant checkups are required to continue in the program. These offenders’ cases are usually dismissed due to their involvement in the program or their sentence is only shortened. Participation in these programs are completely voluntary and if qualified to enter, the offender must agree to complete all the tasks given and report to every summoning from the court. If an offender doesn’t complete the program, they can be prosecuted or their sentence will be revised and will be placed in jail. Drug courts are considered one f the most effective ways to eliminate drug abusers and avoiding incarceration. While in the program offenders are monitored and results of every drug court case is very astonishing, but the long term effect of these cases are beyond the rulings of the court. It is not known if those who participated in the programs continued their lives drug free. These courts have been examined and tested to see if the results justify the cost of the program. The operations evaluated such as the number of participants, referrals issued, and drug court graduates. The cost savings of processing the offenders through the program instead of straight jail time, and results compared with those who have been completed their sentenced jail time as opposed to those in the programs. The therapeutic jurisprudence theory…

Rays of sun gleamed upon the bronzed skin of my family while splashing clear green water of the Tennessee River. It was my parents, grandfather, two sisters, niece, and my brother in law. Exhaustion quickly crept among us after a day filled with intense activities such as; skiing, competitive volleyball, and long boat rides on the fragile, slow moving pontoon. We then prepared ourselves for the boat ride home which would soon be a tragedy rapidly moving towards our direction.…

I had already jumped off of it many times, but I knew he would be scared to do it. The rock is twenty-five feet above the water, and it was all there. I lept off first. After I rose to the water’s surface I started convincing Chandler to jump. He walked up to the edge of the rock and let his life jacket drop. “Don’t, it’s suicide,” I screamed. He bailed off of the rock and didn’t come up. I waited and waited. He didn’t come up, so I swam back to the boat. I climbed up the boat ladder and sat down. I looked to my right and I saw nothing. I looked to my left and right beside me was Chandler! He had swum under water all the way from the rock to the boat without me noticing. I felt so great because I had successfully taught Chandler how to swim. He thanked me again and again. I had to tip my hat to him because he did something that I couldn’t even do. We packed up the boat and headed home. At the beginning of the day I thought that it would be impossible to teach him, but turns out he was a better swimmer than me the whole…

I saw the rip current open up a few times that day, but by the time it rolled around noon, it was pulling more because the water was going out for low tide. When I saw the raft, I never really put two and two together until the raft got in the rip current. Two kids and their dad were rapidly moving out to sea. I reacted just like we were taught in class; dropping my flag and calling in on the radio. I leaped from my tower to the sand, grabbed my buoy and sprinted down the beach. I did a perry angle and took off into the water, throwing my buoy to the side as I got knee deep in the surf. I porpoise dove through the shallow water, came up and sprinted out to my victims, keeping a close eye on them as I did. By the time I got to them, the dad had abandoned his kids and swam in saving himself. The kids had jumped out of the raft, which was now upside down and proceeded to try swimming the raft in. I told them I was a lifeguard and here to help. The girl, about my age, looked at me as if I were crazy and told me they didn't need any help. I looked at her younger brother, who was tired and panting, and I asked if he was okay. He desperately told me, gasping for a breath, that he needed help. I wouldn't have been able to bring both victims and the raft in, while fighting a rip current. So I firmly grabbed the rope on the raft, with each of them holding, and started to kick. I soon realized I was getting nowhere and still drifting out to sea. Panicking, I scanned the beach for back up. When the lifeguard truck pulled up, I let out a sigh of relief. There were about 5 guards who came hustling out of the truck with buoys to come and back me up. When they reached me, it took some pulling to get everyone in safely raft…
