Descriptive essay- New Year's Eve
Energy in the air was inviting, however the temperature was repelling us. Sharp coldness stiffened our hands and brought rosy blush to our cheeks but the irresistible anticipation kept us planted where we stood. Everyone was getting settled close together to conserve their heat and to begin to agitate excitement. I took a deep, icy breath as my lungs swelled with air. Overhead, the sparse clouds cleared like opening curtains to reveal the young night. I leaned over towards the warm fragrance and clenched his arm. The air was a stingray nipping at my heels and pinching my nose. Above the vague horizon of pines, the sky suddenly exploded into a splash of colours and patterns.

Fiery red and golden yellow dispersed into freckles of azure and then blended into the tone of the universe. Ruby-peach bows streaked across the panorama and then disappeared. For a second, my heart dropped, but then suddenly picked up to twice its tempo when the new clashing colours scattered across the blue. With each successive burst, the colour was a chameleon, constantly changing it's surrounding.

We hit a clearing and drop, the world spinning around us, soft grass comforting our throbbing body, the smell. The smell, what is it? It’s new and fresh. We open our eyes and are stunned by the sight. The darkness drowns us, but it is softened by something beautiful overhead; stars, all of them, completely beautiful, each one on its own and every one together. Simply magnificent. We close our eyes and relax, as it seems for the first time in our life, we are completely at peace. Before we know it, its…

The sound of violence--things crashing and breaking as a series of screams rang out, one in particular, one that I recognized as my father’s, that rose above all the rest. The roar of the crowd buzzed throughout the entire building, and it almost seemed to make the blocks shake. I couldn’t even imagine how this much commotion could be even contained in the Rochester Sports Complex. What little sunlight cre into the room, gently splashed onto my face, warming my cheek . The wind howled through the woods. The trees violently swayed, threatening to topple with ever shudder. The rain tore through the night, drenching everything in it's path. The dark grey sky crackled with energy, illuminating the whole forest for a fraction of a second. An almighty BOOM sounded throughout the forest, and all surrounding areas. A single spear of lightening darted down to the forest floor gone before a second glance. The sky rumbled; a dark ominous sound.…

Noise. The dull roar that gave way to the cacophonous din that swirled within my ears. Or maybe more specifically, it was the lack of said noise that reigned around me and the profound silence that held me prisoner in my own body. I make my way over the grass, which is covered in freckles of frost that make a soft crunch with each tiny step I take. The trees that surround me are clustered together in company, yet look lonely without their companionship of leaves. They stand tall and strong, like an army of ghost warriors that are ready for battle. I walk amongst them, lightly brushing against the rough and unkind bark as I go. There’s no sign of life in the park besides myself and the typical flock of gulls. I breathe in the nippy winter air through my nostrils, taking in the usual smell of gasoline and hot dogs. My feathers ruffle, as the light gust of cool air tickles me, making me look like a rabid animal. New Yorkers, both young and old, now jog past me with the reflection of the frosty sun glistening off of their foreheads. They don’t see me peering up at them in wonder, but I most definitely see them.…
