It's got a taste of elegance streaming throughout the room. From the passage of the bedroom, which is filled with 18th century prints of Raphael's decoration, to the soft cornice of the ceiling that is engraved with a light leaf shape and accompanied by a rose. In the middle of the room sits the astounding four-post bed, which is finely detailed with soft shapes and flowers. The whole room is decorated cream and gold, again accentuating the feel of elegance and sophistication. The room is filled with 19th century portraits of the Howard family and their…
Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…
Inside, the living room is exquisite with fully restored oak floors, and bay windows. He shows me around the two bedrooms and marbled tiled bathrooms. We end up in the kitchen where I’m swept away with melancholy. This is the house we once envisioned one day for ourselves. Only, at the time, we were flat broke. I tease, “Did you rob a bank or what?”…
How cool is your grandmother? Nikki Giovanni, Gary Soto, and Lorna Dee Cervantes share poems with their audience about their grandmothers and the lessons they have been taught. Throughout the year as we grow most of our grandparents get to see us change into the person we are today. “Lord these children”, Grandparents do not care what generation you grew up in they are mostly traditional and do not take disrespect too well. Here are some poems dealing with: Performance in everyday life, Traits that significantly shape human identity, and traits that shape cultural backgrounds.…
I walked back through the soft grass, stepping onto the little pathway that led to our back door. I opened the screen door, walking into our old living room; though, it was more like looking into a room I had never seen before. It was vacant, missing our various pieces of furniture that had lived and entertained us for years. The red, comfy couch no longer sat against the wall, inviting us to sit down. Our bookshelves, full of stories and fairytales that Mama would read to me, were gone, in some moving truck on its way to Indiana at that very moment. And lastly, our ancient family clock, the one that had been passed down for multiple generations, was absent from its place on the mantle. If I thought hard enough, I could remember and imagine the laughter of people and the aroma of southern cooking all throughout the…
A certain childhood place always takes me back whenever I flip through my family’s dusty photograph books, and that place is an apartment area in which my family used to live in Arlington, VA. Honestly, I do not understand why this place is the first place to attest in my mind as beautiful. I doubt anyone could consider an apartment beautiful. What is more, I know there were times I despised the place; particularly, since I was the baby in my family, everyone left the apartment for either school or work, and I felt lonely. Nevertheless, perhaps, Arlington, VA was beautiful because I made it so in my mind.…
As I look to the scenery I acknowledge its beautiful details. It is a wonder of the world that soon may fell between the cracks. A place that I will cherish all my life, a place that is one of a kind. Two hundred places I’ve seen only once. Vivid in my memory for a few years and but soon may be forgotten. But this did not. It will remain in me forever, and as scroll up it reached the end. The end of my photo album I have in my phone last summer vacation I had with my…
Inside and outside I smelt many scents and aromas. A pleasent scent of chicken, candy yams, buttered corn, and gravy filled the inside of the house. The scent was almost as good as a room full of fresh roses. While the aroma outside was that of grilled chicken, fresh cut grass, and a garden of flowers. It smelled as good as fresh pine trees, or after it rains and the air is fresh. This is what I smelled during dinner.…
The closest story that I would base myself off of would be the Translating Grampa's House. I mostly chose it because I draw just like the main character in the story. While I read the story Translating Grampa's House I thought of why I chose it. Also how I would write the essay. Another reason I chose Translating Grampa's House as my story is that we have teachers just like the main character in the story. Mostly how all schools have teachers. Also how all schools have classes that have teachers. Without teachers, there would be no classes. The other reason why I chose Translating Grampa's House is that how the main character has art classes at his school. I also have an art class at my school. Most schools have art…
One time at my grandma's house,I got so fatigued that i went outside with my brother to play basketball. He went inside to snatch us a drink.…
I lay patiently on the cracked leather chaise longue. The modest room was a fading cream colour, books line the wall near my feet in an ornate shelf, a small desk and chair sit by the wall opposite me next to the iron door, there is a single swinging light in the middle of the room which casts a golden glow over everything and a painting of a sailing ship hangs above me.…
Pushing past my anxiety and entering the family’s home, I look around me and took in the large, multi-purpose room. Scattered amongst the large wooden dining table, couches, and television, the sentimental trinkets and children’s toys added warmth to the small home. Although the walls were unfinished and half-painted, the home felt lived-in and cherished. The air was stale and warm, yet the room exuded an air of sweet, beloved family memories. Immediately,…
I am greeted into my back yard by the unfortunate screams of ambulances sirens, but I continue to focus on the subject and I slowly begin to notice that the sky is noticeably more vibrant than it had been in my pervious observation. The light from the sun complimented the bright blue sky very extravagantly, causing me to gawk at its beauty for minutes on end. Thankfully the wind is much milder, allowing me to sit down and enjoy myself as I take a long gaze into the distance. To the least of my expectations, it was very quiet in my back yard; no birds, no barking, no children playing, just pure silence. I’m not sure if I like the muteness, but despite the hush, the skyline speaks to me with its spectacular vastness and its magnificent color, breaking the previous silence I found myself trapped in. In conclusion, the colorful sky, the warm rays of sun, and the mild winds provided me an ideal atmosphere to enjoy the view; I am very content with this morning’s…
In days beyond recall, I spent my time in a pasture that seemed as wide and long as the ocean. There was a great pond on the side of field, which had a little creek the ran straight across. It was full of meadow flowers and tall amber glowing grass. Being tiny for my size it came up past my waist ; from the deck of the great white house you could barely see me. The house was not my own, though I could go on that I wish it was. It belonged to my Grandfather and Grandmother, who were both imaginative, kind, along with goodwill to all.…
In 1991 Hazare launched the Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Aandolan (BVJA) (People's Movement against Corruption), a popular movement to fight against corruption[30] in Ralegaon Siddhi. In the same year he protested against the collusion between 40 forest officials and timber merchants. This protest resulted in the transfer and suspension of these officials.[31]…
