Many people consider the split between the Shiites and Sunni similar to the split between Protestants and Catholics. Both events played big roles in the forming of our world as it is today, showing us the pros and cons of those situations. A similar occurrence could very well happen in the future.
The split between the Sunnis and Shiites occurred in year 632 after the death of the Prophet Muhammad. What the difference was between the Sunni and Shiite people was who they wanted to follow up Muhammad, and this is where the dispute began. The Shiites believed that someone in Muhammad’s family should become the next Prophet, and they favored the husband of Muhammad’s daughter, Ali. The Sunnis believed that the successor of Muhammad
should be someone who is not family, but viewed as an elite human being. This sparked a very violent war, but both ends got a chance to have a caliph but never reached an agreement and this is the reason these two groups are still split today.
The split between the Catholic and Protestant came in a similar fashion. Martin Luther, who was a Catholic priest and enjoyed being a Catholic priest noticed that some of the things the Catholic church was doing, was morally wrong. Luther tried explaining this when he brought it to the attention of the Church Leaders, instead of attempting to solve the problems, they chose to get rid of Luther. This really angered Luther and he nailed protest on the door of the Catholic church. To my knowledge in the reading, this separation was not as violent as the separation between the Sunni/Shiite split. These religions are both similar and different in many ways, one is that Protestants do not recognize a pope while Catholics do. Today, both religions both still currently have an impact on the world greatly.
