Dirt The Movie

Dirt the movie talks about the soil beneath our feet. It talks about the dirt and soil that we are exposed to. The opening seen talks about how dirt is alive. Dirt has the tiniest species of life in it. It offers insight into the environmental, economic, social, and political impact that soil has around the world. Soil contains countless billions of microscopic organisms; it ultimately provides life and fertility to plants, animals, and humans. Dirt also purifies and heals the very systems that sustain us, without which nothing could survive. I learned some interesting facts while watching this movie. First off, four and half billion years ago Earth was once a fiery ball of molten rock. All activity on earth was volcanic. Rain pounded rock into clay and thus formed the ocean where life began. Microscopic life from the sea mixed with clay to create the first living dirt. However, two million years ago humans changed the life of dirt. Humans use the dirt every day. We use it for our food, we use it for shelter, and we use it to hold and clean our water. It was interesting how natural builders today still use dirt to build houses or use them as some element of a house, such as a floor or wall. Also people in poor countries use the dirt, to make pottery. Dirt is where our crops grow. It is important to each and every one of us in some way. We were made from dirt. In Hebrew Adam means, dirt or clay, and Eve means life. We depend on dirt to purify and heal the systems that sustain us. The process that turns garbage into gardens is central to our survival. Demand for natural resources has completely changed our relationship with dirt. Without healthy dirt it is hard to survive natural disasters. We need good dirt for everything in our lives. So anything we can due to sustain the dirt that we use will help.
