Many offenders use methods such as filtering, and blaming to ignore the good things. Filtering is when offenders ignore all positives and focus on negative things, such as certain triggers. Even when offenders are around a bunch of positive things, filtering them out will allow then to focus on negative triggers and things around them. This is a sign that offenders are reluctant when trying and get better. Blaming is when offenders chose to place all the responsibility on others. They will make it seem as if others are the cause of their problems. For example, offenders will blame all their problems on triggers but never confront the triggers. To counter this CBT therapy implements techniques such as journaling, cognitive reconstruction, exposure and response prevention. These techniques can help substance offenders and sex offenders face their negative thoughts and urges, and reconstruct the way they think and act.
