The post-apartheid Government of South Africa has made remarkable progress in consolidating the nation 's peaceful transition to democracy. Nevertheless, transforming South Africa 's society to remove the legacy of apartheid is a long-term process requiring the sustained commitment of the leaders and people of the nation 's disparate groups. Apartheid was a political system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority 'non-white ' inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by white people was maintained.
