Disorderly Male Baker Act Case Study
On Thursday December 31, 2015 at approximately 1949 hours, FHEO Security Officers were dispatched to room #503 Beds 1 and 2 for two Disorderly Male Baker Act Patients who were acting up and causing problems for their assigned Psych Sitter, including one patient from Bed 1 who kept trying to leave the room. Security Officers Omar Alonso, Carlos Ayuso, and James Johnson arrived and met with Nurse Celia Baggya and Psych Sitter Andell Philip while Security Supervisor Steven Evans arrived later and met with Charge Nurse Charlene McGee. Nurse Baggya and Sitter Philip both stated that the patient in Bed #1, Benjamin Atsu (DOB: 01/23/1991; FIN# 85028628) became aggressive towards medical staff and was also trying to provoke the patient in Bed#2 who was Armando Montalvo (DOB: 08/15/1986; FIN #85028608). Security staff stood by the room and observed both patients until Nurse Baggya came back with some sedative medications to be administered to both patients in an effort to keep them calm and cooperative.

The patient from Bed #2, Armando Montalvo, was cooperative and took his medication voluntarily but the patient in Bed #1, Benjamin Atsu, became uncooperative and refused to take the medication.
Therefore, it became necessary for Security staff to go hands on. Security Officers Alonso and Ayuso using MOAB Techniques had to put the patient down on his bed controlling his arms and legs while the nurse administered the medication. The patient struggled a bit attempting to get up but did not escalate the situation to where it was necessary to use soft restraints to control him. After the medication was given the patient was released by Security and he remained calm and did not try to retaliate or fight back. Officers Johnson and Evans kept on eye on patient Montalvo while this was happening and were not forced to go hands on with the second patient. Security Staff stood by until the medication took effect with patient Atsu who was the aggressor during this
incident.
At 2017 hours, we all cleared on the call, there were no injuries to medical staff, patient and Security, only hands on with patient in Bed #1, and no further information is available at this time.
