Do Nothing Project
Wednesday October 16th 2013 at about 3pm, my boyfriend of about 5 years on and off was gunned down in the Roseland area. 28 year old William Aikens father of 4 was found laying dead coldly in an alley on 105th Perry. With little to no answers over the weekend, a few days w/o William seemed to prove to be really difficult.
For this sociology project I decided to reach out to the community & neighbors. I remembered how some churches would often have prayer hours for anyone who desired it at that moment, mostly on corners in the Roseland area. I thought choosing this particular thing to do would be out of the norm & would show me how many people actually cared what was going on in there area, or that it would possibly show that William was truly loved & would make someone speak up so that justice could be served to his family. Saturday October 19th I made a poster that read “A thousand times we needed you, A thousand times we tried if Love alone could have saved you, you never would have died” and at the end it read I just need a hug. I went to the corner of 107th Wentworth Ave to see what my reactions would be.
